I have hope
    #23375692 - 06/24/16 12:04 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Habitat: Near a round-about, urban area. Under a thorny bush with mulchy wood chips all around.

Gills: Brownish? white?

Stem: Varies in length, solid, thick/thin.

Cap: Some have blue in the middle, but are overall quite brown/yellowy.

Spore print color: No print yet.

Bruising: Blue.

Found near Wellington, will get habitat pictures soon. If these are active, what do I do with them from here? They are currently stored in the freezer as my friend told me that keeps them potent. Do they need to be dried?

Habitat shot and what some of them look like from the top:

These look like psilocybes to me. Make sure they all bruise blue and have purple prints. Also, wait for a TI to confirm.

Unfortunately, if you've frozen them while they are fresh, they are probably ruined.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa, congrats. Putting fresh mushrooms in the freezer is universally considered to be a bad idea. I wouldn't really let them thaw, because the potency will probably drop very rapidly. Scoff the dose down asap after you take them out and weigh them. In the future, dry them completely thoroughly and store them in an airtight container with desiccant if you're interested in long-term storage.

Also, next time you should try to pinch them off at the base of the stem, or better yet use scissors, rather than pulling up lumps of the substrate. That damages the mycelium and reduces the change of future flushes, or can even kill the patch outright.

Ok, they were in the freezer for about an hour to an hour and a half. Thanks for the quick reply, I took them out instantly. I pinched some but I will cut with scissors from now on. Is there another way to preserve them short-term? i.e. do I keep them in a sealed container or let them get air?

Is an hour and a half in there too long? I don't wish to eat them for a couple of days :frown: this makes me sad because it's my first ever decent find haha.

They might be ok, unless they felt frozen. Once frozen the inner cells expand and the water inside bursts the cell. Once defrosted they turn to mush, no pun. Or maybe I meant it....

Dry them out if you plan to take them in more than a few days otherwise into the veggie crisper fresh for 2-3 days. Treat them like store bought mushrooms and don't consume if they're rotten, food poisoning is no bueno.

The gills on them are a lot darker now, and they're quite wet. Not completely frozen though. Left on a paper towel to dry, heres some pictures hope they're allg. http://imgur.com/a/i05On

As they were drying out all the blue seemed to spread around the gills and they all just seem to be covered in blue, theres blue on the paper towel. Some of them have gone completely blackish blue. Does this mean they're useless?

Yeah, that's what you really wanted to avoid happening... I doubt they're totally inert, but don't expect them to be anywhere close to max strength.

I can't tell you from the pictures if they're bad or not and I'm in a hurry to get out the door. It doesn't sound good so I would suggest you brew them into a tea, then split the liquid up into doses based on the amount of mushrooms you put in(dosage is up to you) and then freeze until it's needed.

I don't think it looks very good for these mushrooms. I'd look for fresh ones before trying to store these. But that's just me.

When you find more, let them sit on paper with a fan blowing on them for about 48 hours. When they are cracker dry, put them in zip-lock bags or glass mason jars and store them in the dark. They will be preserved for a very long time this way.

I'm brewing the tea now, would it be fine to freeze the tea and consume later or does it need to be consumed straight away?

Or should I just cut my losses and toss them,

Cheers for the mass amount of help anyways guys.
