Matthew McConaughey wants to save True Detective by possibly returning
    #23374318 - 06/23/16 04:25 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Season 2, with an entirely new cast (as it's an anthology series), pretty much bombed by all accounts. But the season 2 dive might change that strategy. At least for one season anyway.

By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer

Matthew McConaughey was a force of nature during his eight-episode run as Rust Cohle on True Detective and it seems like the Oscar winner is willing to reprise the role under the right circumstances.

True Detective season one was hailed as one of the best television shows of the year and it earned McConaughey and co-star Woody Harrelson a slew of award nominations alongside show creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Unfortunately, True Detective season two failed to live up to expectations and there’s no word from HBO on a season three ever coming together, but McConaughey says he’s spoken to Pizzolatto about potentially resurrecting the character for another run.

“Yeah I would. I miss Rust Cohle. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights. I was a happy man when we made that for six months cause I was on my own island. Luckily, my wife put up with me. She said I was pretty nice when I came home,” McConaughey told the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday.

“But yeah, I would. I’ve talked to Nick (Pizzolatto) about it. It would have to be the right context, the right way. That thing when I read it, I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy Rustin Cohle, I’m in.”

McConaughey said that seeing the world through Rust Cohle’s eyes for six months was one of the best experiences he’s ever had as an actor so reviving the character for another run of True Detective would be an easy sell on him.

McConaughey is currently promoting his new Civil War drama Free State of Jones, which lands in theaters on Friday, but he’d be more than happy to return to television for a show like True Detective.

It was a transformative part and McConaughey was masterful as the pessimistic detective, who often times spoke in soliloquies and long diatribes while dissecting anybody and everybody around him.

The eight episode run of True Detective was arguably one of the strongest single seasons in television history so it’s no surprise McConaughey would give up his film career for another six months to jump back into those shoes again.

“People have said ‘what about you going from the big screen to the small screen?’. That used to be sort of a little more taboo kind of idea to do — not anymore. Plus if it’s great quality, you’re actually getting better quality dramas on the small screen today, a lot better than you get on the big screen sometimes,” McConaughey said.

Considering the end of True Detective left both McConaughey’s Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson’s Marty Hart alive and well, it’s possible the two could team up again for another mystery.

HBO has stated that they want to continue working with Pizzolatto on another project even if it’s not True Detective, but a second season with McConaughey and Harrelson at the wheel would likely be welcomed by a ton of viewers who loved the first go round with those characters.

Intriguing. I say go for it. Season 1 was can't miss television. Bring ole Rust back for another case...since he was getting up there in age though and gone from the force by the end of season 1, they may have to have it predate that season 1 storyline. Which is fine by me.

Let's do it

Were you a fan?

Absolutely loved season 1. It was arguably my favorite season of television that I've ever seen.

Season 2 was a mess, though. But that was with an entirely new cast and story line.

I thought the second season was still watchable.

Oh yeah, definitely watchable, and I stuck with it throughout. It had its moments. But personally I thought they just out thought themselves on it trying to swing for the fences for something epic, and it ended up being a confusing mess for a lot of people.

I havent seen season 2 out of fear of disappointment. The first season was epic.

I loved the concept though. New characters and story every season. They should just keep trying with that. They just cant put a funny guy like vince vaughn and a shitty actor like SWAT on the frontlines, they need to keep the drama interesting. Its not that hard if they throw some creative minds at the script, and cast the right, proven actors.

I feel like bringing back Rust Cohl would be a cop out, and make the show as a whole a fucking mess. Own your failure, and try again. You are HBO, you just spent 10 million dollars shooting the battle scene from the last Game of Thrones episode, you got this!

You will be HIGHLY disappointed, trust me. Fuck season 2. Goddamn. I think it took me like 3 hours to get through the last episode because at that point everything had gone to shit, was spiraling into shit further and I found none of it remotely interesting. Season 2 is what happens when a TV series tries to cram like 3 seasons of a show into one season. Just way too damn much going on.

If season 3 doesn't start out strong and stay strong, I won't be watching season 4 if they even get that far. Season 1 was so amazing that I actually tolerated season 2 just to give it a chance when I wanted to give up on it from the first episode. I regret that decision. I won't make that mistake again.

Matthew McConaughey alone won't be enough to save season 3 I don't think. It wasn't just him that made season 1 good. It was both of them that did. At least IMO. I loved McConaughey's character in the show but it wouldn't have been as great without Woody.

Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.

While I do definitely see your point, and it is a good point...but that first season was special. And it was special because of McConaughey, the script, and the director(s) from that season. If there's a shot at bringing that magic back together for another run...man that would be hard to pass up, wouldn't it?
