I used to work in a winery bottling plant. I know how this happened.
So to start, I worked at the Budweiser of wines' bottling plant, but we bottled hundreds of different wines from around the area.
On the bottling line, to switch from one wine to another, it would take like an hour, maybe more.
But sometimes we would switch only the style of bottles, or the style of cases. 12 bottles a box to 6 bottles a box. Open cases of cases that were glued shut. Sometimes we would do a breast cancer awareness month bottle for the last few hours of the day, and would have to switch bottles and cases and shit. To change the packaging, not the actual wine, it would only take us like 10-20 minutes.
Why is this important?
We would bottle this $5 bottle of Merlot all day long. Then we would be told we had to switch the line over to a new kind of wine. We would load all these new boxes in the machines and switch over all the stickers and caps, pull out all the old bottles and replace them with new fancy bottles. And this would all take about 20 minutes if we didn't fuck around and everyone wasn't tipsy lol.
Then the line would start right back up... Pumping the cheap five buck chuck wine into these new fancy bottles that said limited reserve blah blah blah from the whatever estate. And they would have little gold serial numbers on the labels and cases. The bosses told us that it was $100 bottles.
Costco $12 a gallon vodka is grey goose.
Goodyear makes tires in Mexico and puts made in America on them.
Buy local.

This is a cheap wine that won a cheap wine contest, a cheap wine that Walmart has stocked in it's cheap wine section in Chile. Nothing is surprising.

My favorite bottle of wine retails at roughly 12$ a bottle. I have disliked some bottles that were worth 25$. It's all taste.
Although once you go above 50$ per bottle, it's next to impossible to compare. Even the worse $50+ bottles still taste better than the best of the cheap.

Things like this have happened before on more than one occasion. If you do the test under double blind conditions, cheap wines can (and have) beat much more expensive wines.
The power of suggestion (expectation) is enormous. If you examine the professional literature, "cheap" things beat out the much more expensive ones all the time.

No mix up, it was on purpose. They put the cheap wine in fancy packaging with a fancy new name and sold it for $100 instead of $5. Quote:

I remember reading about a cheap vodka brand that wasn't selling very well. So they hired some people to figure out a marketing plan, and their plan was to change the bottle from a cheap plastic one to a really nice, grooved glass one. And then they raised the price to like 90 dollars or something. And it sold better than it ever had previously when all was said and done.
It's been years since I read that. Not sure if it's a true story, or just gets passed around a lot, but I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

Good read. Best part was "if we werent all tipsy lol" I would become an alcoholic if the boss let you sip on the ever flowing wine.
I like Lost Vineyards. Trader Joe's carry's it and it's $4 a bottle. They have a bunch of different varieties as well.

I'm allergic to wine so I never got to get drunk.
The machine that puts the caps on bottles was real shotty. So a few times an hour it would fuck up and start spitting out hella bottles with no caps or with caps all fucked up. We would have to stop the line and then take the bottles and pour it out into a big metal barrel. This is when people would pound a bottle as fast as they could.
Once the barrel was full. We would pour it down this drain, the wine would go into a centrifuge, it would separate the alcohol from the grape juice. We used the alcohol to clean the equipment, and they rebottled and sold the alcohol free grape juice to Dry counties or countries like Saudi Arabia.

Its honestly decent tasting and comes in about 6 different varieties. Cheap way to fill a wine rack and I haven't had bad hangovers from it compared to wines twice the price.
