I also am using pre-made substrate jars from midwest grow kits and to be honest, they are fruiting fine at the moment. They aren't a waste of money, but actually the best option for those of us without a pc.

The best, you say? Hmm... How about we actually try to be smart for a second?

According to the first Amazon listing I found, 4 quart jars cost $42+ shipping. Let's say that they are feeling very generous (which never happens) and give them away with free shipping. Let's also say you find a cheaper source of $30 dollars per 4 jars.

The first listing for a mirro 22quart PC is for $60.

So, simple math tells us that you can buy a PC with the same amount of cash you would buy 8 pre-sterilized jars. That doesn't seem like the best option to me, given that a PC will last a long ass time and a sack of grains is dirt cheap. With 8 jars, you can do maybe 2 large sized monos, with a PC, the sky is the limit.

So in truth, pre-sterilized jars are neither the best option money-wise, nor is it the best option for growing. A sterilized grain jar needs to be inoculated as soon as possible, you can only know how long it sat if you prepped it yourself.

If you are silly enough to like getting :adventuretime:, good for you but don't recommend it to anyone else because what you said is neither "the best option" nor is it smart.

Edit:

Forgot to mention that with pre-made jars, you have to use a spore syringe, increasing costs. With a PC, you can make agar and with agar, 1 syringe/print will last a lifetime if you wanted it to.

I admit, more thought should of went into my post. You made some great points about the jars costs. The 6 jars on midwest cost me $20, and if I remember it was another $8 or $9 for shipping. So that's about $60 if I order again for another 6 which is what I planned. Or I could buy the presto PC off amazon for $70.

I know what I would do. Actually, what I already did. TBH $70 for a presto is a steal, I don't know how someone living in america would opt for pre-made stuff.

My presto cost me 220euro (~$250?) to import to europe, it's still one of my most important buys.

you dont even need a PC for pf-tek. pre-made pf-tek cakes makes no sense.
