Ban e-cigarettes in bars and restaurants, leading doctors say [UK]

E-cigarettes should be banned from public places like bars and restaurants because of the risks of "passive vaping," medics say.

Senior doctors said that allowing people to vape openly normalises the habit, and could encourage children to take it up.

But public health officials immediately rejected the idea – saying it could be damaging as it might deter smokers from switching to e-cigarettes.

Speaking at the British Medical Association’s annual meeting in Belfast, Dr Iain Kennedy, a consultant in public health from Glasgow, called for a ban, warning that there is no evidence of the long-term safety of the habit.

Dr Iain Kennedy, a consultant in public health, from Glasgow, said: “It is a myth that there is no such thing as passive vaping.”

He said there was clear evidence that non-vapers living in households with vapers had higher levels of exposure to nicotine.

“There are new potential risks, and we don’t yet know the level of those risks,” he said.

The doctor suggested the public had been given false reassurance about the safety of e-cigarettes, because their safety was normally compared to cigarettes – “probably the most harmful manmade product” in existence.

“It is a precautionary principle – until we do the studies and have a better idea of what the risks may or may not be, we should restrict their use in public places,” he said.

The devices were “undoubtedly safer than cigarettes but that does not mean they are completely 100 per cent safe,” he said.

Last summer Public Health England sparked controversy after concluding that e-cigarettes are 95 per cent safer than conventional tobacco, and encouraging smokers to switch to vaping.

Health academics later said the research was flawed, tainted by vested interests with no reliable evidence to show vaping was safe or did not provide a “gateway” to smoking for youngsters.

At the BMA conference, doctors backed a ban on their use in public places, saying they  were concerned that it had taken 60 years to “denormalise” smoking even after it was found to be lethal.

“E-cigarettes are probably going to be a very useful tool for helping people quit but we don’t want vaping to be seen as a cool activity to take up if they haven’t been smoking,” Dr Kennedy said.

Doctors also warned of the dangers of a flavouring Diacetyl, used in flavoured e-cigarettes, which can cause a disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, which scars the airways in a condition known as popcorn lung.

The additive will be banned by the EU from next year.

Rebecca Acres, medical student from Rutland, Leicestershire, spoke against the motion, which calls for the ban of e-cigarettes in all public places which ban smoking.

“I am concerned that this is a stealth attempt to encourage an “e-cigarette ban,” she said.

Rosanna O’Connor, director of drugs, alcohol and tobacco at Public Health England said: “Vaping is not the same as smoking, secondhand smoke is harmful to health but there is no evidence that e-cigarette vapour carries the same harms. In fact a ban on using e-cigarettes in public places could be damaging, as it may put off smokers from using e-cigarettes to help them quit.”

I'm ok with this. I use a vape, and do not want to eat a meal in the presence of anyone's vapor, including my own.

Growing up, tobacco used to be an outside smell, wherever people gathered. You would expect it to be in restaurants, and, especially, in the smoking section.

I could see why you might not want it around food, clothes, or elevators.

But, in more-or-less open spaces, if you had a particular sensitivity or health problem, maybe you should tend to avoid crowds.

in an open area outside, IDGAF. in a bar, don't really care either... I don't like to go to bars that allow smoking inside, makes me smell like an ashtray and lungs feel funky after.

Some of you are speaking as if vapor and smoke are the same thing. Got news for you, if you're within 30 feet of another human you are breathing in what they breathe out - especially indoors. You exhale vapor every time you breathe - ban breathing NOW!!!

I never understood how someone could think blowing out a huge cloud of "vapor" the size of a bong rip every 2 minutes inside of a building is somehow socially acceptable when smoking isn't.  Sure it might not be as dangerous to people's health second hand but it still has all the other qualities that make smoking in crowded places annoying.  Actual vaporizing on low temp where you're exhaling thin wisps without burning anything isn't as rude.

This. Especially if it has nicotine
