MY OUTSIDE CUBE PATCH (Pennsylvania)

I'll be honest, this was one of those holes I just messily filled with spend bulk substrate, added coco coir and vermiculite. No formal tek. It's been raining a lot and been upwards of 80 degrees here in north PA, still I didn't expect to see anything come from it but I have some B+ popping up. My dumbass self accidentally knocked 3 baby pins out because I couldn't believe they were cubes and j was trying to ID them. Lol.

A testament that the mushroom dies when it says it will
I place my spent cakes or bad grain jars in this plant pot I have full of compost. I just pour boiling water over the compost and let it sit for an hour to kind of make it a bit ''clean'' and then dump everything and cover and water again. No luck so far but oh well

You don't need to "clean" compost thrown outside. There is a natural balance to organisms growing outside. For example trich, will not be as ruthless outside as it is inside. Woodlover growers actually drop a piece of clone or some spores in an LC, without any type of sterile tek or precautions. The result is obviously a contaminated LC but once they throw this outside, the mushroom mycelium is still able to out-grow anything else most times. I wouldn't be totally surprised if the boiling water is doing more harm than good to tell you the truth.

Similiarly, you don't need to add coir and verm to spent tubs buried outside. There is plenty of soil, wood and a myriad of other nutritious organic matter for the mycelium to grow on. Save your coir for inside grows and only dispose of your spent tubs outside. Contaminated jars should also be buried outside, they still yield results more often than not.

i do pretty much exactly this, minus the coir/verm. i just throw all my spent substrate in a hole out back. its MOSTLY shady there but gets sun in only the mornings. seems a perfect spot for mushies in the morning since they dry so quickly during the day anyway.
for a while though ive been wanting to throw some hpoo or similar in with my spent substrate and make an LC so i can dump the end of it into the hpoo/spent substrate mixture :p. i doubt it would hurt it, and i can only imagine it would help with extra myc growth!

You could do what I mentioned above. You could just dump your first LC that contams in there, instead of making one specifically for dumping outside. Contamed LCs are very likely to fruit when they are thrown outside.

mustve missed this one. thats a PERFECT idea! last time i tried LC, i made 3 just incase 1 or 2 contam'd. i got lucky and only one had stalled growth/possible contam. but that would be the perfect candidate for an outdoor toss

In all honesty I am really not bothered by it as this is just a dumping site for triched out tubs, bacteria infested jars...etc of p. cubensis. No active mushrooms grow naturally in my neck of the woods.
Thank you for the info. Once the season kicks in again I will try your method with some of the local species of P. eryngii
would be nice to see the results

Hey guys sorry for the late response. I actually have a horse and cow pasture 200 feet from My house. I may get some to make the outside bed yield a little better. I got 5 mushbuddies today from it! I'll post pics soon.

i do the same. i break up my spent cakes and bury them outside. but the dirt here is so hard and dense that i likk the just make a pretty big hole, and fill it with the spent cakes that i broke up, and also, like the OP said, ill throw in some verm, and the last time i used a little potting soil that had been dumped outside a long time ago, and then cover the holes back with a thin layer of dirt that i break up as best i can. but when it rains, the dirt goes back to being super dense and hard and basically blokes the cakes under it, and it will only allow them to grow from the sides, when it cracks. so thats why i use very little of the dirt to cover it anymore.
its that kind of red dirt thats like mud but solid haha. really kinda sucks for growing cubes/other mushrooms, ive noticed. very few grow naturally around here. i have to go out into the woods, away from all this really hard/dense dirt.

You could add layers of black dirt and straw & reintroduce native soil over time as you put spent substrate outside. That red clay shit tho is hard as nails you'd dprobably be better off with a compost pile in a shaded area.

One of my tubs ended up reaching the end of it's ropes yesterday so I grabbed a bin bag, lined the inside of a pot, broke up the cake which still smelt like fresh myc, and mixed it with just some dehydrated compost, packed it in and then dumped a glass of water.
The plant pot is now sitting on my window sill.
I wonder what will happen

You could put a bit of fresh grain spawn down with coir and top soil. Eventually the center will colonize and, in the mean time, the top can be a project of its own. The myc you've mixed up already will know there's a colony above it and vice versa to make a stronger organism. So you may get a few flushes while your spent sub project starts up. Don't over water it.
I'm working on a planter for ovoids, so I layered colonized spawn, coir/fresh chips, mixed it up with organic soil and topped it off with a colonized layer of chips. I'm expecting it to eat itself, maybe flush from the strong top layer and maybe skip a season. Cubes are great though since they're fast. Whichever the case, you'll probably see fruits. I'd def throw some fresh spawn on top and throw a plant in there.
The thing about tossing subs is that you're imitating the environment. New mycelium will form and feed off the fungal sugars caused by the decay of your sub. It's one of the best things new myc could eat, and it knows it's eating remnants of itself and promote growth. <- I read this somewhere and tucked it away but I'm stoned so if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

That's actually exactly what happened to me!
Cubes aren't native to any part of Pennsylvania. All of my yard is that clay like soil.
That's why I added the coco coir/verm mix in a hole.
It did just that and started fruiting around the sides though I noticed. Very odd I haven't gotten one fruit from the middle but there's about 6-7 pins on the sides.
This may sound odd but if I found a solid chunk of mycelium could I transfer it BACK indoors? Like back to a tub filled with coir?

The patch is expanding. It wants to sporulate to where it doesn't already live. Heck, you could run a few tubs for a solid first flush and then use the sub to feed it. Right now would be good feeding time in PA just keep it tended. For the winter you can lay down a bunch of straw and a tarp to protect the top layer.
Edit: If you're in PA you could be feeding ovoid spawn to grass clippings and wood chips. Even contaminated LC can be dumped over chips and straw. Manure soil and you've got two psilocybe species sharing a habitat to form a stronger top layer.

Anything that is brought in from outside needs to go on agar first to clean it up. Besides, you have already gotten the "best" of this specific culture, you will be better off starting from scratch again and letting that do it's thing.
You can always do what Adden is suggesting to make it last longer/perform better. Keep throwing all your spent/contaminated stuff around that area and it should perform year after year.

Really good plan thank you! Ovoids are my favorite, if I find any next year I'll be sure to make some LC.
So I'll just keep feeding it spent cakes in hopes they'll keep coming back.

Pretty much. Throw in a few bags of organic potting soil, dunk and/or crumble your spent sub, mix it up. If you need to start a new patch, make sure it's in a shaded area. You can dig down a few inches and lay cardboard for a patch foundation, then colonized spawn, mix with wood chips and native soil and you've got your ovoid patch every spring and your cubes perpetually growing. Keep us updated, I love when people bring mushies outside. It's good for the environment too.

If you can get h poo, or something similar, it's what I've been burying my spent subs with. It's worked out pretty well too. Grass clippings or chopped/soaked straw on top will help too. I water every other day.
I'll see if one of my spots is still producing and get a pic.

Awesome!
So if I had a tub with dead myc ( coir, soil, peat moss, perlite mix)
Could I dump that into the patch to feed the new mycelium?
