Germinating Peyote In Winter?

I've got roughly 12 seeds that i'd like to germinate ASaP, I bought them online and don't know the condition they are in so I'd like to germinate them now, but the only problem is it's winter! What temperatures can they withstand during this period? The only good heat source I have is an old hot air fan that'd chew through electricity like nothing, but i'd be okay with using it during colds nights but need a little light shed on germination temperatures.

24c to 29celcius is ideal. I had to google conversions cause im a man of the people. Jaykay. I see you are in oz. If you could get it to those twmps tou should be fine. I feel any lower and germination is hindered. Dont know what wlse to offer unless you have like say a heat mat or something.

I was thinking a heat mat a well as a propagation chamber next to 2 windows that gets maybe 12 hours of direct sunlight per day and maybe 4 indirect, also want to propagate a few other small cacti species with the peyote.

Then I would recommend that you get a more useful and economical heat source. I stand my seed trays on a heating mat that was made for a vivarium - just a few euros from a pet shop. It is waterproof and uses just a few watts - it is plugged into a light dimmer and I adjust the temperature with that.

No. No. No. Cacti seedlings should not get direct sunlight for the first few months of their life especially if they are inside any sort of propagator. Keep them well lit but in the shade.

Now you're talking. Is it fluorescent tubes? Keep them ~6 inches above the pots.

My trays of sprouts sit under a pair of 13 W, 6000 K, fluoros. Until they look like miniature adults and not blobs of jelly - when I start to introduce them to the sun.

And really I'm not looking to consume them, I'm starting a cactus garden so they'd be an awesome addition to the collection.

You'll find we're not that judgemental in the EG (except when assholes come asking for ID of cuttings they poached from someone else's garden).

Oh thats a total
Even if you are thinking of consuming them, like i did when i first grew, in a few years time youll be onto trich hunting.
Now i think of my seed growing in years terms and not in consumption terms. Hope that makes sense.

Not necessarily - I do not have a single trich, and could not identify ANY of them. Plenty of Lophs though - 42 at the last count.

Yours are so friendly though, remember? Sprouting like weeds. 2 things so cool i have found, a fissuratus baby probably a couple years old amd a mammillaria theresae. Which i found years ago in another pot.

I've germinated peyote seeds in winter in the past, without using a heating mat of any kind. Temperature inside the house was usually around 65-70F. They had indirect sun through a window and a CFL to supplement it.

So I've got hold of an older 60w electric blanket that I might supplement for the heating mat, along with 220-240v fluorescent fish tank lights, that should kick them off well, also for the medium I'm considering to use potting soil, coarse river sand with a mixture of perlite and dolomite, with a pinch of gravel to line the bottom. Hopefully they kick off well during the winter, and by spring I should be able to ease the caution off a little.

Yes, I have germinated cactus seeds at those sort of temperatures - which is about the lowest you can get away with.
But spending a couple of euros on a heat mat will make your seeds germinate faster and the sprouts will grow quicker. Things are always better if you get the right gear.

Yeah as I said hopefully the blanket will do a just as good if not better then a heating mat.
