Getting exited first timer.
    #23371656 - 06/22/16 10:06 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

So offically it's been a week and I'm more certain than ever that I can see my mycelium forming as the jars is loosing a little mosture but I think that's because of the myc. No signs of any contamination yet but I'm on the look out my jars are displayed where I can just watch them grow.

You'd get more respondents if you posted pictures of your colonizing jars?

I'm also curious, for anyone really, do you guys have a special place in your makeshift lab/grow-room to place jars or do you leave them wherever?

I'm curious mostly because I can not keep them in my makeshift lab anymore cause it's too hot. I'm not sure if exposing them to the outside, ergo outside the ''lab'' will be harmful for them??

Can store jars wherever you like, they don't mind. Long as your within colonising or even fruiting temps, your good to go.  Just don't handle them too much, set and forget.  I assume your jars have some sort of filter on them, should be nothing to worry about contamination wise.

Btw, jars have no problem colonising all the way up to around 90F, any higher than that I would worry about growth slowing or stalling out.  Thermal death is just over 105F. They colonise best between 70-80F.

Thank you Chief :super:

Temperatures here are friggen crazy, especially this year. We started with 30C temps in the beginning of June. Best place I could find was a small spice cupboard in my kitchen which I wasn't using. Temperature in there is 27C

was thinking of moving them outside, somewhere with more ventilation, typically a windowsill, in effort to drop that temp down to 1-2C

I'm a little worried that my jars are stalling cause of the heat. I hate where I live, top floor and I'm a living oven :laugh2:

EDIT; And yes, all my jars have a 0.3micron cellulose filter disk at 1inch diameter with a 9mm SHIP :pipesmoke:

That's my first little city bottom jars just got knocked up yesterday the top a week before. They are bed jars made with a 2/1/1 ratio of verm water then browvn rice flower and have a top layer of verm for  a filter sterile jars for sure I probably over did that part alil but my mosture inside seems fine. As for a lab nah I'm just really clean a lot of alcohol but careful with it I keep everything together for the most part until I actually use it as needed I have cabinates full of misc. Stuff for projects like this.

someone is about to bash me for saying this. but me personally, i use a TiT incubator for ANY temps below 70 in my home. i currently have a room closed off and insulated so no air can get in. AC is locked off in that room too. with sunlight peering in for a little light, i now leave all my inoculated jars on a shelf in my closet where it sits at about 70-74F all day. 65ish at night.

perfect i think.

during winter though, you better bet ALL my jars are sitting in my TiT incubator at 74-78F, idc what people here say :p im not advocating this for newbies as it can cause bacteria to take over and grow before myc, but i personally cant wait the extra week or two for colonization when my house is at 60 or less constantly....

I just have a small room where I grow out my tubs on one side and a couple of meters on the otherside I have a small desk with my SAB and a small shelfing cupboard alcohol, detergent sprays, paper towels, gloves...etc

I usually keep my alcohol and stuff on the bottom layer of the shelfing board while my jars on the upper most. There is a window sill as well where I like to keep them when I run out of space, they love the light exposure :super:

This room just gets hot very quickly and summers here are brutal so I kinda had to move them to a cooler spot

a small space heater over winter keeps my whole room at a stable 24C, quite a low setting and barely uses electricity

I love winter, it's my season to grow. Can't figure out this damn heat

I have a walk in closet with no airflow in it I just keep the door closed but this is my first time so anything can happen as far as the temp it stays between 77 - 79 f only thing is the closet is in my bath room but I'm a very clean person been working in the cleaning industry for a few years now.

i think youll be fine. thats a BIT high of a temp. 80+ makes bacteria very happy lol. but as long as youre below that, thats where i have the FASTEST colonization personally.

Yes, higher than 80F can promote bacterial growth, bacteria can also grow just fine at lower temps.  As I said anywhere around 90 I would start to worry.  I have seen jars colonize and fruit just fine at these temps though.  70-80F is optimal range, that is where you should shoot for.

Incubators are a complete waiste of time and brain power. They are pointless unless you live in a very cold part of the world. Jars will colonise all the way down at 60F, or even lower; they just take a lil longer is all.

If you are comfortable with the temperature in your home, so are your cubensis mushrooms.  Just a general rule of thumb.

Yeah I live in the desert so it's just got and dry I'll never need an incubator. 8 days in I'm pretty sure I can see growth now I'll post some pics at the and of week 2 to verify where I'm at and make sure every thing is going okay the new jars seem more moist and more brown where as it seems like the week old ones are turning white and drying alil

I run an AC where my jars are if I feel warm.  If I feel cold at all, I just shut it off, they seem happy with that. My room can get extremely hot on warm day, the sun beads right on the other side of a wall in it onto bricks, which just hold all that heat there. I can get my room all the way up thermal death temps likly if I wanted to, in the summer with AC off and door closed, it turns into a sauna.

In the winter I do the oppisite, I put a small oil space heater in there and just set it to where I am comfortable.  I don't use thermometers at all unless I'm pasteurizing.

No issues regards temp flucuations or dehydration in the jars from the AC?

Just out of curiosity what's the rule when using rubbing alcohol to sterilize the needle. Like wait times without a lighter

Nah, you're fine with an AC in the same room.  I use it to control my temps in there mainly, cooling my home just comes along with it.  I leave the door wide open when it is running so it can flow out into the rest of the house, it is 10,000 btu and does that no problem.

Jars won't dry out.  With tubs in the room you may need to mist a bit when running ac a lot, as it does suck moisture from the air and make it a bit dry. I have the same issue in the winter though, naturally dry air so I have to mist more.

Don't.  Alcohol is for sanitation, not sterilization. Needles should be flamed red hot, that alone is more than enough.

this ^

i make sure half my needle is red hot. then i wait a sec or two and squirt a bit of spore solution to cool it off just enough to go in my jars. easy enough, and has been effective thus far.
