When dunk/rolling do you remove the dry verm layer?

I left it on top of mine because mycelium growing in it. Should I scrape it off on my next cakes?
Edit: Also, I didn't flip the cake when I set it in my SGFC.- So whats left of the dry verm layer is upright. Should I flip those cakes? There are inch long pins already formed so I don't think I should flip them over now

That verm layer was used as a filter during colonization... You totally want to scrape/wash it off in the future.

Thanks guys, will do next time. Hopefully I didn't just screw up everything by not scrapping the verm layer off :/
My last question is what's the reason to flip the cakes when placing them to fruit?

I have no idea... I don't flip them... The bottom is more flat, and sits better.

flipping is from when peeps used to put a full lid of verm under the cakes I think. There's really no real reason for it.

I made the same mistake. I'm still learning myself but if you don't have anything growing yet, it's not too late to just switch out for fresh verm. Just harvested this little beauty today
I didn't realize I needed to remove the verm layer either but my cakes grew just fine (to give you a little piece of mind) What I did was opened my jar upside down and left the verm layer in the jar lid for my cake to sit on. I misted my cake, then dunked the whole lot under vermiculite lid and all. Looking back now after reading some of these replies it seems like an obviously stupid idea, but my cakes ended up turning out fine anyway. I'm putting a layer of fresh verm on after dunk.
