I have some questions about my monotub (pics)

So I have a couple mono-tubs one's not ready one might be, but idk I have a few pics the tub was spawned with wbs about 10 days ago using coir/verm following Damion's 50/50 tek. Idk if this tub is ready to fruit or not I made a post but didn't provide enough info so I'm trying again. Here's what the one tub looks like now.
 What do you guys think?

Yup
Once it's sat a few days after finishing colonizing it's good to go.
Some people wait till the see pins to fruit it. But it will be fine either way.

That tub looks golden and ready to fruit.
DO EEEEEEEEEEEETTTT
You could have fruited that instantly after spawning. There was or is a trend on these forums of instantly fruiting. I've tried it and it has worked great
I would also case it to get a good spread flush

Its fruiting now, i didn't case it, I didn't have anything to case with and it's only cubes so i'm not to worried i'm gonna try and case my other tub when its ready and see what happens, see what works for me and all that, humidity shouldn't be a problem though since im in florida we're nothing but humidity haha
And i heard about putting it into fruiting right after spawn i just didn't want to go that route i'm not in much of a rush or anything and that idea seemed sketchy to me, maybe ill try one day

Another question, how loose is loose when it comes to the top polyfill? I have the bottom nice and snug but not crazy snug the, lop is loose but not like hey im falling out loose.

That's not sketchy at all in fact. I hate taping holes so I always fruit after spawning. If anything, I will just stuff the poly tighter than I would do for fruiting but I always have some FAE going on.
Also, thought I should mention, Damion's tek is actually 8quarts of coir (1brick) to 2 quarts of verm. His name is 5050 (Damion5050), not the coir:verm ratio.

That will differ from one grower to the next and even from one grow area to the next. The draught from one room might be different from another in the same household. The humidity will also differ from one location to the next. IME, no one can tell you how to best dial in your tubs, that is only acquired by experience. Your description seems accurate though, just see how your shrooms/substrate reacts and adjust it from there. If it dries quickly, tighten the poly and if you see signs of lack of FAE, loosen it.
Loose at the top and tight at the bottom isn't really neccessary as well, just see what works best for you. I stuff all my holes with the same density, works pretty well for me and it was easier to get right than the method that is mentioned above.

I know that tek didnt mean 50/50 that was a typo lol i followed it exactly as it was written out, im gonna try the poly from spawn next tubs i do and see how it goes. Ive got quite a bit more to go, got 5 syringes left haha i used golden teacher to start and learn from

If you are using a spore syringe, you just got lucky, nothing else. My first two weeks of cultivation(culture work mostly) went flawlessly, after that, there was not a single agar plate that didn't get covered with molds. I spent months struggling with it until I bit the bullet and bought a flowhood. This is while I was using agar, which is the best tool against contams that we have. I would have probably quit mycology then and there if I was messing with syringes instead.
BTW, you should start with a no-pour tek for agar at first. It's the easiest as well as the safest for someone who is new to it. Pastywhyte has a great no-pour tek, you should give the search engine a whirl and find it.

i just read pastywhyte agar tek last night. amazing information there and definitely my go-to for my next agar experiment. i have a feeling once i start with agar primarily, i wont be able to go back. seems thats the general consensus for most others as well though :p

This TEK will explain all the basics of mono as well as how to prep the poly
Typically you want the top ones loose. What I do is grab a small 4inch sheet, fold it once and start rubbing it on my palms with gloves on, slightly applying pressure until it's fluffy
You can also follow my link in my sig. SBJ has a neatly piled step by step guide to possibly anything that has to do with the cultivation process. It has HELPED ME A LOT and saved me a lot of time in regards to searches.
In all honesty, there are many good teks out there, it's more of a ''let's stick to this route for now'' type of situations

Contrary to what newbs believe, agar makes cultivation easier, not harder. Sure, it's an extra step but it is an extra step that will bring piece of mind as well as better success rates. It might take you an extra week or two to inoculate jars with agar, as opposed to a syringe but if your syringe inoculation results in a contaminated monotub, the agar mono will be going strong still. Not to mention syringes are a waste of money and are something you just have to keep buying if you don't have agar to clean up the spores from your own grows.

I second this. Agar is definitely the way to go, noobs or not, just get in there and do it.
Personally I've never done it, it's easier for me with syringes however I am very pissed at the lousiness of the grow. I'm itching to isolate my own genes and preserve + the amount of cultures I can share with my friends would be amazing

if youve never done it, you cant say one way is easier than another lol. while ive only done agar once, i was blown away by how easy it was. easier than G2G, easier than inoculating grains. easier all around, and better for clean growth everytime. i recommend agar, even though its been a LONG time since ive done it. i WILL be doing it again soon!

My apologies.
In this context ''easier'', for me, I'm referring to it's availability for it's price in comparison to the quantity I get.
I'm aware on how random the genes can be in spore syringes.

I don't see anything wrong with supporting a method that has had ridiculous amounts of success and it's benefits radiate like the sun. I admitted I had no experience in it but I would encourage others to try it if they have the availability

The main problem isn't the genes, although that is a factor. Cubes are one of the most pin-happy species of mushrooms, they will just fruit wherever and whenever they can. It's not uncommon to get a full tub with a MS grow.
The problem is that spores are never 100% clean and syringes can easily harbour bacteria, as well as molds. Bacteria is a bitch because it reduces yields and newer growers tend to not notice it.
Agar is pretty uncommon and expensive where I'm from. I buy my agar and malt extract from ebay, nothing stopping you from doing the same. When you think about it, I can buy a half kilo of agar for about $40 and it lasts a ridiculous amount of time, even though I use it a lot. Buying a syringe for every 10 jars will cost more in just a few batches of grains. Agar is always the logical choice, no matter where you're from or how experienced you are.
The only thing holding you back is you, not it's availability.

Thus far I have not been so lucky to get a full tub with MS. Methods are improving and I'm getting better results but not exactly. This is why I want to focus on agar.
Most of my tubs have triched out. I agree that bacteria is a mega bitch. It's been a problem and just like you I do suspect, partially, from the syringes.
I get most of my supplies, including the grain, from online suppliers. It really does not cost me a lot either. Sometimes it can be a bitch to note down suppliers since I'm also from Europe and everyone else seems to be from the US, shipping costs and what.
Trust me, I know what's holding me back but that is a different story. I never said agar work was not a logical choice. I know it is and I do want to try it, in due time. Meanwhile I'll encourage other posters to try it too

Grains can be found in any country that has birds and livestock, which is basically every country on earth Just have to know where to look. If you like WBS, try pet stores and buy it by the sack if you have the space for it. If you prefer larger grains like I do, oats is found in pretty much every single livestock/horse feed store. I buy a 25kg sack of oats for 11euro, lasts a very long time. So unless you literally live next door to your vendor, you are overpaying for the grains because of the shipping. Specialized stores will tend to have lower prices as well, so you should definitely try and find some.
Things are definitely harder for us that live in the EU but you should always try to make it easier on yourself. I was pretty much hopeless in finding a cheap grain but I kept at it until I found out where I need to ask. Persistance is key.
I have a great lab grade agar supplier on ebay based in the UK should you ever want one. Bought a kilo of agar for ~57euro with shipping included. It is by far, the best agar I have ever used, melts in cold water and has great gelling strength.

I don't understand. As far as I know agar requires sterile conditions at every stage and cleanly transfering to grain is a PITA without a flow hood. Grains also require a sterilizer or pressure cooker with a pressure gauge which is difficult and expensive to obtain outside the USA.
For a newb or someone not interested in growing commercially or continuoulsy, syringes and PF cakes are much easier and work well without all that stuff and you can always spawn the cakes into a bulk sub with a simple pasteurization, to more than double your yields. Agar just seems like a lot of hassle and needs a lot more of a lab setup to avoid contamination.
Plus you can't clone forever, right? You need spores at some point, and making your own spore prints requires sterile tek. Buying spore syringes is well worth it IMO as it simplifies things a lot, and the contamination rate has been very low in my experience (and usually my fault). Yes, you can get higher yields and uniform crops with cloned mycelium from agar but it's a lot more work and investment unless I've missed some more recent teks that make the job easier.

Yes, you can get higher yields and uniform crops with cloned mycelium from agar but it's a lot more work and investment unless I've missed some more recent teks that make the job easier.
i didnt say it was cheaper and/or easier to obtain the materials required.. but in the end it's easier for someone looking to stick with a hobby they truly enjoy...
if youre going to do something, do it right; right?

Most of your comments are inaccurate. Transferring wedges is easy because you will have plenty of time to get experience doing transfers when using agar. You definitely do not need a flow hood to use agar, some use a SAB with better success rates than I do.
If you think a PC is not worth buying, I can see why you think agar is "a waste of time". For anyone serious about this hobby, cakes are a waste of time. They take infinitely longer to colonize and half pint jars are not exactly big either. At any rate, importing a PC to Europe just to do grains and agar will be more worth doing than buying syringes for as long as you grow. You have to keep buying syringes without agar because you can never really use your own spores with any kind of confidence. Syringes will cost you ~$20 each (IIRC) without shipping, that is only 10 jar inoculations, 20 if you really stretch it. 1 syringe will last you a lifetime if you use agar, you will be saving money if you buy a PC and agar in the long run, not to mention higher yields than any cake spawned to bulk can muster since you will be able to choose good genetics.
A PC also doesn't have to have a pressure gauge, it's nice but definitely not a neccessity. A mirro is just as good as a presto and it doesn't have a gauge.
I recommend agar and bulk even more so to newbs, because the chances of failing are higher so why not start with the best on day one? You don't have to grow commercially to buy a PC or use agar, that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.
All agar needs is a plastic box with 2 holes in it, hardly considered "lab grade". Agar can even be sterilized in a microwave, even though this is a really bad and slow way of doing it.
You can definitely use clones for a long time, if you do slants, you can easily keep a culture young for over 20 years. Even longer if you really wanted to and it's not even hard to do either. It's true, you have to start from spores at some point, but if you buy 1 print you will be able to print more. You can effectively trade those prints in the marketplace to get new species/varieties and it doesn't matter how dirty the print you are given is because.... you guessed it, you have agar.
You can wipe your ass with your hand after taking a dump, pick your nose right after, sneeze on your print and then wipe the snot off the print with your brown smudged hand and you will still be able to clean that print up on agar, so no, you do not "need" especially good sterile procedures for printing and using your own spores when using agar. Syringes are "worth" buying if you are only interested in getting a handful of shrooms with the pf tek and get high but for anyone who is serious about mycology as a hobby and a homegrower, they are not.
I urge you to know what you are talking about before you start spreading nonsense. Honestly, if I were to mention all the upsides of a PC and agar over cakes and syringes, this post will span pages and it is already far too long.

You didn't offend me at all, what you said would have been detrimental to anyone reading it had I not corrected it though.
There is just no way around it, if you are serious about mycology as a hobby, agar and a PC is a requirement. A PC is not even all that expensive to buy when compared to syringes in the long run. If you ever end up getting serious about growing, you will start recommending the same.

Supalemonhaze said: BTW, you should start with a no-pour tek for agar at first. It's the easiest as well as the safest for someone who is new to it. Pastywhyte has a great no-pour tek, you should give the search engine a whirl and find it.
I looked up that tek earlier and it seems simple enough, I definitely want to start cloning cause spore syringes aren't cheap enough for long run deals. and I've learned how beneficial cloning can be.

Supalemonhaze said: Contrary to what newbs believe, agar makes cultivation easier, not harder. Sure, it's an extra step but it is an extra step that will bring piece of mind as well as better success rates. It might take you an extra week or two to inoculate jars with agar, as opposed to a syringe but if your syringe inoculation results in a contaminated monotub, the agar mono will be going strong still. Not to mention syringes are a waste of money and are something you just have to keep buying if you don't have agar to clean up the spores from your own grows.
the extra steps wont bother me I enjoy having something to do and things to learn/perfect lol

Honestly, I attend an agricultural school and I have asked so many people where I can buy large amounts of oats or rye, as I prefer larger grains ( we're so similar ) Our feeding mills just use pelleted form of feed for horses and cows. We are not large enough to have pastures and all that so I think the farmer's have no need for them. I get 1kg of rye for 1euro online + shipping, so far, that's the best I can find but I'll have a look around more and see what I can get. Maybe I'll give WBS a try but it puts me off
And dude... you and me have so many things in common being Europeans. We should definitely share links

Sure, I always try to find stuff locally if I can. Most times if it is used for something else (like grains for livestock, alcohol for labs etc) I can get it for a better price locally. But feel free to me if you are looking for a good deal on something, I might know some companies for certain stuff.
Have you actually tried to look up warehouses/stores that sell grains to people who keep horses as pets? I live on a 300sq km island, doesn't get "smaller" than that. Oats are still a 5 minute drive from my apartment. The best grain would also be the one with the best price, as well as one you can get used to using. 1euro per 1kg is very expensive when it comes to grains, you should at least experiment with small bags of WBS bought by the kilo from pet stores, regardless of how much better you think rye/oats are. Once you nail down the prep, you can go ahead and use it exclusively. If you don't, then at least you can say you tried. I'm still quite confident you can find them locally though, horses are a popular animal in any country or locality.
Agricultural schools will not know where to buy things for horses if there is no one who owns them. I thought there wasn't a single grain available except for what I was buying in health stores. Until, of course, I asked someone who actually keeps horses.
PS. There are no pastures over here either, people keep their horses in garages turned into stables and ride them in the streets. While I agree that people who grow livestock for meat will be more inclined to feed that animal a shitty product, a pet owner will want the best for his favourite animal.

So far I use bulk websites like aliexpress for stuff like spawn bags, petri dishes...etc I will definitely take you up on that offer when I am in need, thank you very much that is very kind
I try to get things locally as well, it's much better and less hassling. Alcohol is the easiest and cheapest shit to buy locally, along with gloves and facemasks. I know the grain is expensive for it's amount but I'm very stubborn when it comes to grain and absolutely love rye. I've worked with oats, infact if I get dehulled oats from somewhere I would switch to that. I'll take your advice on WBS, got my last 10kg of grain, will use that and run a couple of experiments with WBS, see how that plays out.
People here are religious about their horses, so somewhere there is my golden goose who sells grains, as you pointed out, probably I haven't looked hard enough. My school is full of people who own horses as pets, hell even pigs and cows, they weren't helpful when I asked and seemed confused, they didn't know what I was talking about. I'll continue asking a couple of more people with horses and this time just ask about grain warehouses. Much like you I used to buy from Healthfood stores too lol then I found that austrian company and it was the best. At a healthfood stores I was getting 500g for 1.75, which was ridiculous.
If my suspicions are correct on where you're from, you have to point me to these warehouses.

Well, they aren't really warehouses, they don't need to be since the country is so small. They mostly sell the stuff from big garages. We get black & oats and cracked & whole corn, which isn't a vast variety but oats are pretty much king IMO. I could work with whole corn as well but oats is superior. Rye is very similiar to oats, they can be prepped in the same ways. They also sell hay and straw, with the straw being a great additive to bulk substrates due to it's ridiculously cheap price and the amount of water it's able to hold.
Well if they are as attentive as you say they are, they surely have some kind of whole hulled grains. You are better off asking the person who actually buys their food, if these are the horse owner's kids that you are talking to, all they care about is patting it on the head and riding it
I think you should run the WBS experiments while you still have your favourite grain on hand, that way you are still growing with your normal routine, you are just playing with something else at the same time.
I've found an awesome company for jars and pp5s. I haven't used a petri dish in like a month. Petris are the best really, but it's nice to have something reusable. This company is also the cheapest source of glass quart jars I have found, by far. Their PP5 selection goes from petri-dish sized up to 2 quarts. I have used their 1quart pp5s, takes some getting used to but they are good considering how cheap they are.

Or throw a pot outside if you have a terrace or an internal yard without the neighbors having a view. I will warn you though, when I was throwing spent tubs in pots filled with compost, I quickly ended up with a really bad gnat infestation. Didn't really get rid of them until I threw all the compost away. I bought some gnatrol now so I might give it a try again.

You could find a secluded place outside that has some good soil and bury them there. That's basically step one in woodlover growing 101.

This one?

Matches the color of the pixel. Maybe just open it in an image editor and reduce the size to around 200x200, then it should let you select how much you want to crop into a square.

Its still pretty loose, i just noticed like two of my holes werent filled properly lol meaning i cut the holes uneven as fuck on this tub and they had gaps that werent being filled
This tub was harder to cut and i couldnt find anyone with a drill, my other tub the holes are pertty much perfect
I'll see how these new holes wrk out and adjust as i go if needed

I make mine with a solder iron, been making some pretty fucking perfect holes lately with it.
Some people remove the top poly altogether after pins.

Soldering iron work but be careful inhaling plastic fumes or any burnoff. As supalemonhaze said, you can remove the top poly when pins show or even keep the lid cracked open slightly. Just keep a eye on the sub so it doesn't dry out. Especially overnight or when you're away it's probably best to loose fill the holes or close the lid back.

Lol im gonna have to make new tubs i can get a sautering iron forsure from my friend didnt even think of that til i saw it on a thread i was just on and now you guys saying it.
i'll have to try the poly out of the top when i have pins i dont sleep much at night so i wouldnt worry about it drying before i wake up mainly when im at work is when id worry, ill just have to experiment when that time comes
Idk if this could be it but i realized i had epsom salt laying open in my room from drying stuff from the field that may be why my room got all dry but idk if it has that much power to it just a guess

I got a 1.5" holesaw bit for my drill. I think it was about $3. I've used it dozens of times, so I think it was a smart buy. I couldn't be bothered soldering holes. supa has to go about things differently because he lives on the moon.

Is your a/c running a lot? That will bring humidity down dramatically, you have to learn a balance when dailing poly in on monos. I don't use fans during winter or summer bc the heat and ac pull the humidity down enough. During milder months where neither are on I will run a fan to create airflow and much looser poly than usual because the humidity is higher.
I don't think that open salt would change anything in a room though.

Haha I use the same thing. Holesaw bits rock. Start off slow with little pressure, let the drill do the work and you won't get a single crack. Plus cleanup is a breeze!

for 1/4in holes ad the like i use a drill, but i used my soldering iron to make my SAB holes, and will have to for future montubs.
thinking about getting a bit, now that you mentioned that. i always assumed i would have to buy a specific new drill, and not just a bit haha! im not a tool man, obviously. the more i learn that drills can do, the more impressed i get with mine. they are cool little tools, man. can do so many different things.

yeah, a soldering iron will work just fine. just try not to inhale too many fumes =p
maybe do it outside. thats what i did. but i just looked on amazon, i think im gonna get a little hole saw bit kit, 16 bits with sizes between 3/4in to 5in, and then also buy a separate 6in bit, as well. i think that would cover all the holes i would ever really need to make. plus its like $13, and i get to use amazon prime fo free =D
EDIT - on second glance, reading the reviews, maybe ill want to just forgo this kit and just buy 2-3 single bits that are of better quality =p

This is exactly what I do for all my tubs. Attach the saw to the drill and lay thee sides of the tub on something solid, preferably an old piece of plank considering you're likely to hit it.

yeah. it really isnt all that bad using a soldering iron for it. just need a somewhat steady hand, and a traced circle. i just really like having clean-looking holes. which is hard to do with the iron, with bigger holes, because of dripping plastic. but then, drills will sometimes make the holes a little jagged, too. or have it to where it sorta extends while you drill, umm. hard to explain. like this:

see how those holes have plastic extending in like that? i hate that haha. i usually have to go after i drill and use my x-acto to make it clean.

soldering the edges after using the drill is the best. I use the solder tip on my benzomatic to do that. Keeps the poly from getting everywhere.

I've found so many uses for my drill since I got it, I can hang up shelves, I can make a custom salt shaker lid, I can put a hole in the bottom of the trash can to prevent the vacuum that makes it hard to pull it out, making jar lids, making tubs, assembling ikea furniture, etc.. Not owning tools is a bad place to be.

You can use a few old school millwork tricks to not shatter the plastic.
1. Duct tape the front face where holesaw goes
2. You can use a wood scrap piece in behind
3. Start in reverse to score it

Hehe. Always nice when you find multiple uses for random stuff thats sitting around when problem solving. Drills do come in handy for monos and especially if you make sgfc's. No way I would burn that many holes with a soldering iron. Measure, mark, drill light and steady, sweep up, done.

For my next tubs idk i might just have to try and find a used drill shouldnt be too hard to find locally thinking about it the sautering iron may be easier than what i was doing but the melted mess will be unreal compared to what i did, and i can finally get shelves up with the drill so bonus lol i have to much random stuff and nowhere to display it

Very true but it depends on the plastic and the pressure. I use a heavy duty 1.5inch saw hole, apply very light pressure on the plastic, just to scratch the surface and I make sure the inside is supported with something. This way the weight of the saw and the pressure of the drill do not crack the plastic and I've had good success. Maybe 1-2 small cracks in the 8 monotubs I made. Even so.... nothing duct tape can't fix

I just use my 1.5" hole bit by hand. I do the outside halfway thru, then do the inside.....simple, quick and no breaking/cracking of the plastic.

hah yeah, i made my first SGFC with my soldering iron. whats worse is that it was only 3mm, so i had to eye it out to double the size for all holes. too for-fucking-ever haha.. and afterwards i felt like i just smoked a water bottle.
Love my drill. hand-me-down for my pappy, twas his pappy's before him. =p
has great torque, too.

i keep seeing people talking about how to properly use the hole saw, and this technique has always gotten me PERFECT HOLES!
use the drill in the opposite direction... the hole saw grips too hard in the normal direction. flipping it around seriously leaves for perfectly clean circles, no cracks, and youd be surprised how quickly it still cuts through(the heats definitely builds as it spins, enough so that it cuts through easily without gripping and grabbing like it would the other way.)
just try it. youll thank me. and i learned this by accident :p
TLDR: simply spin the hole saw left.. not right. boom. perfect circles.

yeah, i even use my drill in reverse when drilling 1/4in holes with a normal drill bit.

Maybe its just my arbor. Hole saw just screws on it doesnt have the two prongs on it like a lot of arbors do.

Bout 4 to 7 days from the first sight of them maturity.
The first flush will last as long as takes the first pins to mature... so about 4-7days

The time varies a little, however I had my 4th flush pop up on Saturday in one of my monotubs, and I harvested last night, some caps opened up fully, so 3 days (72 hours). In my experience, preparing the substrate at field capacity, in a properly dialed in tub, you shouldn't have to dunk until after the 2nd flush.

New question since its rounding the harvest corner
should i pick the ones that mature early or just wait it out? Id rather not have spores dumped everywhere.
And should i just pick them like in the wild or cut them and remove stumps when dunking?
Few of em are getting bigger than a lighter woot woot probably have some more growimg to go still but dang much better than the local fruits

If they don't tear the sub to pieces if you pull em, you should do that. I find that when I cut them, the 2nd flush can't pin where the stumps are left and the stumps get trich very easily.
Harvest the ones that look ready, leave the rest. If you have one that you can't get to, cut off the cap so it doesn't make a sporesplosion and print that fucker.

Do you have a bathtub? If so (or even if you don't I'm sure you can figure something out) pull out all of your poly... Run water gently into your tub... Let it soak for 4 hours or so... Drain the water... Replace poly... Then hurry up and wait for the next flush.

I used to leave stumps but like Supalemon said they end up getting triched out and less pins due to less surface area. I found the best way is to grab the mushroom from the base and twist, this prevents the sub from tearing apart and later, if the mushroom is thick and leaves a hole, you can patch it with some verm and it will get colonised pretty fast
Nice harvest man

Depending on how strong the stems are, you can get spiral fractures
Gently tipping it one direction, then harder the opposite direction can work very well.
Dryer shrooms but moistened sub also help to limit damage all around

With my PE, I could be as rough as I wanted, barely even damaged the sub but these martinique I've been growing lately grow in these clusters that have a really wide stembutt. They hold onto the sub like a baby on it's mother's nipple, not shitting you. Ain't no way but to cut with these mofos.
