Possible Contam BRF cake Opinions Needed

Hi, I was checking on my BRF cakes that are nearly done colonizing. In fact, from the outside they look 100%, but Ive had good success waiting to birth until I see the first primordia appear.
I have 1/2" layer of verm protecting my cakes. I loosened the jar lids a great deal to maximize air flow and figured I'd go all the way and remove them just to take a look at my verm layer. What I found was some white wispy web like growth near the edges of the jar (see picture). Is this contamination ? It looks sort of like mycellium, but I know it shouldn't be able to grow through the dry verm layer. Is it still safe to continue with my grow given that it is on the top of my 1/2" verm filter layer ?

They're fine. Mine always grow through the dry verm barrier, and mycelium loves rubber. That rubber seal on the metal lid, I have often found little pins growing off that ring when I let my jars consolidate all the way... Which is something I suggest you do before opening the jar, leads you less contaminate prone, as well.
I usually don't even bother taking the dry layer off, I just dunk the cake and leave whatever stays there at peace. The layer usually retains a good amount of moisture for the cakes.

Thank you for your input. Interesting to leave your dry verm layer on to help absorb moisture during the dunking. Do you fruit the cakes with the dry layer up or down ?

I also think your cake is fine. Next time, I would just wait and not take of the lid though. It is not worth the risk. When I put my cakes in the fruiting chamber I normally put the side that had the dry layer sticking up.

Ok, I thought I remember reading that lids weren't even necessary when using a dry verm layer, but I guess that isn't true. That's the reason I felt it safe to remove the lids otherwise I wouldn't have done so. Thank you for your input.

That is not true, indeed. Always keep the lid on, otherwise you'll dry out and get contaminants. That's with any colonization and consolidation process. And I birth my cakes both ways, I guess it just depends what mood I'm in as well as if they're pins on the top or bottom. The dry verm layer pointing up is beneficial to retaining moisture though..
