Spore solution leftover from washing.
    #23369957 - 06/22/16 01:23 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all!
I recently went on a camping trip, and when I returned, I found I'd allowed one of my tubs to drop spores and turn into a goopy black mess.
So I filled a pot with cold water, washed my hands, and gently wiped the fruits clean before they went into the dehydrator.
What I was left with was about four quarts of deep purple spore solution. Like grape kool aid with too much powder. Very pretty.
Obviously, this solution is fully contaminated. But that doesn't change the fact that there are millions of spores just kickin' it.
-My first thought was just to pour it all out into a shady spot outdoors.
-Then I thought I could maybe start plates with it, and clean it up through multiple transfers, but that seems tedious and unnecessary, considering I can buy clean spores for cheap.
-My latest idea is this: I have dozens of 1/2 pint jars, and pounds of brf left over from my pftek days. If I were to just whip up a bunch of cakes, I'm sure my success rate would be pretty poor, but maybe the sheer mass of spores I'd be able to inoculate the jars with would give the cube spores an advantage over competitors?
I've had great success spawning cakes to bulk tubs, and I actually prefer cakes for starting plates. (Wait for a cake to start pinning in vitro, open the jar in SAB, remove pin with tweezers, drop into plate). So the cake idea is really appealing to me.

But I wanted to ask you guys for advice first! Is this going to be a waste of time and supplies? I can't be the first guy to be left with an excess of contaminated spore solution, but I feel like there must be something I can do with it.
Thanks for any and all advice!

Making a ton of PF tek jars hoping that a small percentage survive seems way more tedious than making a dozen or so plates to clean up some mycelium with...

I would definitely dump some of that outside...,it's as useful as doing anything else with it would be.
