Russian track team banned from olympics
    #23369554 - 06/22/16 10:25 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

II haven't read much info on this but I understand it has to do with doping. Do you think it is right to ban the whole team? Even those that may not have been doping...

Well, now, it looks like the whole Russian team will be banned. They are saying that even in table tennis and snowboarding in winter sports. This just seems nuts to me...It's been called "A mind blowing level of corruption within both Russian sport and government. Positive samples switched out in the middle of the night at the Sochi Olympics for a dozen medal winners was just one example. There were 312 unreported positive tests in the last 4 years. This reminds me of the old East German swim team in the sixties and seventies.

It's corruption that they haven't been banned. Cheating on an industrial scale going back years.

The number of clean athletes who have had their careers ruined or blighted by this is shocking. If this doesn't get you kicked out of the Olympics, what does?

There are many examples, but Goldie Sayers is a UK Javelin thrower, finished 4th  in the Olympics. Turns out the winner was doping. How much easier would it have been to get sponsorship, endorsements, and credibility for this Olympics if you won a bronze last time, as opposed to nothing?

Even if the medals now go to the right places (which I also doubt), the damage has been done. Throw them all out apart from those who can show they aren't in the system (the Polyanski brothers in triathlon persumably get tested regularly at ITU events).

Crooks.

Ok so the olympics are over and this doesn't specifically fit this thread but does anyone know why Great Britain gets to compete as a single team when they are comprised of multiple countries?

They aren't sovereign countries. It's called the United Kingdom because all the individual states (Wales Scotland NI) swear fealty to the English crown.

The name GB is weird and controversial since it only refers to the island that England Wales and Scotland are on. I read most northern Irish represented the Republic of Ireland because they were pissed about the name "Britain

The really weird thing is in soccer they are all separate. Wales actually made it farther than England in the euros :haha:

Short answer it's like the USSR. Back in those days there was no Ukrainian or Russian athlete rather they were all soviets

Yea Northern Ireland is part of the UK but not GB, semantics...

It just seemed like cheating in a way but I guess it doesn't really matter since all of them combined still only make a tiny area.

Yeah amazing that they could get the whole team banned. I remember East German swim team too. Them (and some of the Soviets, I think) couldn't even get their females to pass the genetic test that they were actually women. I don't think they were doing sex change surgery. I think they were pumping them so full of male hormones that they flunked the tests.

Caster Semenya is legally intersex and she competes as a girl.

The USA cheats too sorry to break it to ya. Outside of the realm of sport (there have been numerous American dopers, lance Armstrong anyone?) we tend to cheat at much more important shit. Like invasions, and the world economy

Or fucking track.

Did you see how shitty track and field was this year?

the only good race was the 400. And that guy said something like "I couldn't even feel my body or see straight" while beating a previously thought unbreakable record

Lol clean athlete

You don't have to convince me that we cheat. I know that. I only really care when it is something like world's fastest human. I've gotten over being concerned about home run records in baseball. I figure everyone cheated after Hank Aaron. Apparently his days were the era of greenies, but I don't believe that they were the same advantage as steroids and HGH. Greenies were speed and I did those in 75-77, and I know that the temporary advantage quickly leads to your body demanding some rest and recuperation. Funny thing is during those years you usually got them from girls, who used them as diet pills. If u went up the ladder they came from truck drivers or the bikers who controlled the whole market mainly selling to truck drivers.

I have little concern with baseball because the White Sox are so bad and will probably dump their 3 best players after the season. I am in some kind of weird weird awe of the Cubs because they were the crosstown enemy my whole life but they clearly look like the best, and I don't even want them to blow it in the postseason. I don't even bother talking to mean Cubs fans and I quit being a mean Sox fan in 05 when we destroyed all opposition. I have one female and one male close friend Cubs fan who I would like to see them win for them.

Football is different. It's brutal and filled with injuries and I would rather see them heal faster, than watch the 2 nd string. And it comes down to partisanship. I like Brady, You liked  Manning. Arguing will never settle anything. And then there is the stupid NFL that mostly suspends people for weed. Go Figure.

On your other two topics Elax: Invasions; you do whatever you can in war but it is ignorant in the complete information age to lie about your reason for invading when the world knows your lying and the somewhat legit Afghan war got resources diverted to the BS Iraq War. W and Cheney were sounding as reputable as the USSR or China in the 50's or 60's

On the World Economy, I'm thinking it has all been cheating since before Capitalism even started. Since the Banking crisis it has gotten more explicit and disgusting. Actually which of these two is more contemptible. First the big banks bundle many hundreds of thousands of shit mortgages into a brand new financial instrument where they somehow don't look like shit mortgages anymore; they look thousands of high quality mortgages. They sell these bundles off  to smaller banks, and then make bets that those instruments they just sold would fail. Or  compare that to taking all the bailout billions from W and Obama  and instead of investing in companies that would create American jobs, they gave all the money to the exec for bonuses. I'm not one of Obama's biggest detractors, but he should have slapped them down for that.

Oh Elax. thanks for the recent post clarifying the specific relationships between the units of Great Britain vs The United Kingdom. I had some confusion there. I recently was corrected on a post when I said the Catholic population of Northern Ireland was higher than the Protestants. But when I checked they said the Catholics would soon be a demographic majority. Not sure what that will mean politically.

Sorry sports guys for going so far afield.

Sports are one of the biggest tools of an autocratic regime, it's really not that far afield Brian.

Why do you think Russia cheated? Why do you think this years Olympic coverage (in America) was almost purely that of Americans winning? It's a huge propaganda tool.

Obviously Russia has fallen much farther down the autocratic path than we have, but make no mistakes all signs point to us moving that way. Rigged elections, controlled media/opposition, all thats left now is political prisoners (Snowden anyone).

Russia has all 3.
