Got a BIG problem with flight simulators
#23366684 - 06/21/16 12:00 PM (7 years, 7 months ago) |

Here's the story
Been playing with flight sims for decades, never had many problems
I have MS FSX. Been using it for 5 years. But not long ago I bought X-Plane. Good game and all but it never worked out for me. I tried re installing it like 30 times, updated all my drivers, installed on a different hard drive, installed under different OS, paid for a New copy on steam, purchased 300 bucks worth of add ons- nothing helps, the game FREEZES on me, almost every time I use it.
I've been over at x plane forums and for the last few weeks we been brainstorming how to fix it. We tried everything, we gone over the program log.txt, I looked at Windows event manager, checked resources. Nothing!
So we came to the conclusion it is my PC hardware and more specifically - my "oldish" AMD HD 6870 graphics card...
The end.
Not really.
Today I had a go at my old MS FSX simulator which I haven't used since I bought x plane. And guess what! It also freezes while you somewhere in flight (sometimes 5 minutes into a flight some time 5 hours)
So from that I can conclude there is nothing wrong with my hardware or my AMD graphics card - over the years I played countless games on this rig all was well. But the fact that simulator worked in the past and now doesn't proves the hardware is good, but the system has been corrupted. What do i do? Any help much appreciated!

First of all X-plane is pretty heavily graphic intensive AFAIK.. an that GPU is kind of outdated so it could be a problem with it.
But the fact that it freezes in another flight sim doesn't rule out hardware necessarily. .
Try testing in various high end GPU benchmarks.
Valley - https://unigine.com/en/products/benchmarks/valley Heaven - https://unigine.com/en/products/benchmarks/heaven Tropics - https://unigine.com/en/products/benchmarks/tropics
If it has similar problems in the benchmarks there may be a problem with your GPU. Or potentially other hardware..
Short of that if you want to completely rule out software as being a possibility, you can do a clean install of Windows.
Also have you tested your RAM?

Ram has been tested alright
But what I am saying is if my GPU is the glitch then it wouldn't work from the beginning!! It worked fine all these years!!! And suddenly it in shit... I just don't get it. could be a worm or some shit
I already run a "stress test" nothing happened but I'll have a go at those links. Keep in mind every software every other game works fine on my rig, why it started fucking up with these 2 sims is beyond me

That isn't true, it could still be a hardware problem that only happens when enough heat has built up.

Here is a long shot, I have seen this happen: borderline, mostly good power supply. Saw one where the rail for the gpu was marginal and same thing was happening and if the power supply got warm/ hot enough the game would freeze.

Care to explained why GPU problems happen when I run these two flight sims but not other games or stress tests?

I'm not saying it is definitely hardware, it may very well be software but I have ran into some very weird hardware faults over the years that don't always manifest like you'd expect. Sometimes they are intermittent.

Sounds like a bad video card to me. Its completely conceivable that a failure mechanism only manifests under particular conditions, which game types do have. I experienced this kind of thing when I mined bitcoins on graphics cards. Some would fail at games but not mining, some would stress test fine but crash when mining. The chips are complicated enough that this kind of thing happens.
You also say that you tested your RAM, but that reads to me like you used it differently with a stress test. You should try different RAM or one stick at a time doing the "real" test - playing your flight simulator.

Ok I can confirm that MS FSX works just fine.
It is only the x plane that freezes. ALL programs, IDE and DAWs as well as around 50 games I had over the years, all work fine. Only the X plane is broken.
I sincerely doubt even buying a new PC will help, hackers are on to me

Then it's definitely an X-plane issue. I've heard that game isn't optimized that well.
Can try messing with some config settings.. I dunno. Check their forums.

Could always fuck with graphic drivers, rolling 'em back or trying betas.... What kind of freeze? Whole operating system lock up? BSOD? Can you control alt delete and close out the game?
From what generic bits I've read
"When a computer freezes after running X-Plane for awhile, the problem is almost always heat related. When the system is running X-Plane, the video card and processor get very hot because they are running at 100% utilization. This causes the temperature to rise inside the case. To eliminate heat as an issue, remove the computer’s cover and aim a fan into the case. Run X-Plane for a while and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you need to add some additional cooling.
Note: This assumes that the system has enough RAM. Running out of RAM will cause crashes as well. At least 1 GB of RAM should be used for current versions of X-Plane (more on Windows Vista and Windows 7). This also assumes that the computer is not overclocked."
A graphics stress test might not be long enough to crash your rig if you are playing the game at load for lengthy periods of time... May be a matter of additional cooling. ATI cards like that run hot as fuck in my experience... If your system is not stable due to an overclock, that could also very well be your problem.

I wish it was that simple
Like I said all games all programs work fine, but not X plane
And it freezes itself, Windows works still, sometime 5 minutes after running it, some time 5 hours into it! So no it ain't heat

How much RAM do you have? Have you tested the memory?
Have you tried messing with all the game settings?
Have you tried this?
Able to test another video card,, a friends or something to see if it might be a GPU bottleneck or something?

The mods over at x plane keep telling me X plane doesnt like AMD cards for some reason.
So, i started looking at some mid range low priced NVidia cards:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23454998
The card i got my eye on is GeForce GTX 750, only 150 bucks
I hope it works

I sincerely hope it's the problem with GPU
I'm saying this cos my bios and chipset are a bit twitchy, with some bugs showing here and there
When I try to update the Intel x58 chipset it says there's "unknown error"

I'm back
3 weeks ago I bought a new graphics card i seem to have solved my AMD heat issue. X plane works under it just fine, no freezes
I been flying for more than 2 weeks no problem, I was about to sound victory, but last night out of the blue new glitch appeared. Basically something corrupts my auto pilot - more specifically vertical speed and altitude hold - it's all over the place. All planes, all airports/airways.
I tried re installing X plane from steam - same problem with a clean installation! What the fuck is going on????? Works fine for 3 weeks .... but then magically develops abnormality
I just spent another 2 hours reinstalling xplane from dvds only to experience SAME problem during my first flight from a fresh clean install - autopilot vertical speed control is busted.
This is not even a rendering/ graphics issue. Its to do with AI/physics of the game...
And it's getting ridiculous
And here's a REAL gem, a real kicker - I had a second sneaky copy of steam together with X plane hidden on my other hard drive, and guess what, it works just fine.
This all is getting fucking ridiculous

So the torrented version works but the real purchased version doesn't? Seems like you're not running the latest version on the torrented one..... Sounds like a patch introduced new bugs..... Sounds like this game was just sloppily coded.

No it is not "torrented" dude, it's a 100% decent copy of a working installation, a "spare", I made this copy 3 weeks ago just to stay safe when I installed new graphics card so it is not torrented in any way
Copied (working version) AND fresh steam copy are both 10:45v
Just spoke with my mate he said it could be a time release bug that or some shit
Or on purpose poorly coded, or its hackers

Either way I spent a whole year busting my ass, installing and reinstalling the game, updating drivers , flashing bios and chipset, updating the sim, investing in a new graphics card, buying a second copy of the game of steam when I already got DVDs, buying 6 new add on planes and new scenery, roughly spent around 500 $ on the whole internship

Problems started 2 days ago when I added a bunch of free ware planes........ If it's the problem with freebie planes , reinstalling X plane should have fixed the problem. But it didn't , fresh installation still corrupt, UNLESS those free planes shit in Windows registry or some other place?

More bad news:
U know the legit "spare" copy? Well I can't multiply it for some reason. I copied steam 3 weeks ago into spare folder but I can not make any more copies of this stupid spare copy. When I try to copy it window demands admin privileges and when I run X plane from this new copy it comes up with a bunch of errors.
So really all I got is 1 working installation of X plane, and if it becomes corrupt I might loose X plane for good
I tried running Ubuntu and copy it via Ubuntu OS but my Ubuntu won't load for some reason. Is there some simple non Windows utility that can copy X plane into a second folder??

This X plane shit is addictive
Usually when the flight is longer than an hour I just jam it on autopilot and do stuff around the house, drink, smoke, read, listen musI'd etc.
That vid I posted is a landing in Amsterdam in a 787, a beautiful plane and so easy to fly

Well since I posted my landing it must mean I fixed it?
Sort of, I got a legit copy on a hidden hard drive which works. What I'm doing - I copied it to my main SSD and running it from there, this way if it gets corrupted - I just delete it and make another copy
I'm still not pleased and confused why new clean installation of DVDs and of steam comes corrupted... But wtf - I'm flying at the moment from Glasgow to Larnaca, 4 hour flight... I'm above Holland
