Pasteurization time Q
    #23366618 - 06/21/16 11:31 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I have access to more aged horse manure mixed with bedding than I could ever use. The question I have it how long does it need to be pasteurized since there is manure in it? (edit: the bedding is fine woodchips...not chunky but not sawdust either)

I would think that the bedding is saturated with urine.

Is the bedding wheat straw?

I hope you have allot of land to spread the bedding out and let the sun do its thing for a few months..

I'm just guessing though..

I edited the post...the bedding is like a really coarse sawdust tiny woodchip material...I have access to older piles that have been leeched by months of rains as well as being out in the sun..I was just wondering if 2 hours of pasteurization would be enough to sterilize the chips due to the presence of the manure. I like the idea of the manure because that way I don't have add any supplements other than some gypsum (assumption  ) Any feedback would be awesome. Thanks

If your planning on making sawdust logs you would pasteurize for a couple of hours at 140-170f.

If you use filtered bags you would would want to sterilize your substrate..

I have some oyster spawn here (columbinus) and wanted to spawn from cardboard to that in buckets. I have no way to sterilize at this time.

So would the same time of 2 hours apply to spawn it to buckets? I guess I'm just paranoid about it getting contams while I'm draining it and letting it cool

Try hydrated lime water for your straw or sawdust/wood chips.
Pillow case work good..

One cup of lime to 10 gal.of hot water between 140 to 160f. soak for 60 to 90 minutes.

That will raise the ph. to 12-13..

That will hold off contaminates until your spawn get establish.

You'll need a few quarts of grain spawn depending on the volume your trying to grow.

RR has some good videos on the subject..
