Dehydro Interuptus

OK - my first mushrooms started to break their veil way quicker than I thought they would lol. Thank goodness I bought a Presto dehydro over the weekend.
I just got them loaded in but see it could take up to 12 hours to dry fully. I have a family event and have to bag out of here in 4 hours.
Is it best to run them for 4 hours now and then turn it on again when I get home later tonight - or just leave them on the trays as is until I get home tonight?
Thanks

It would be fine to leave it running until you get back

Leaving an electrical appliance with a heating element turned when on when no one is home just isn't going to happen over here lol.

Dude it's a dehydrator. The heating element gets no where near hot enough to catch anything on fire in those things. I've left mine on while sleeping, in school, at work, whatever you name it.
Sure it SOUNDS dangerous, but they also tell you to turn your phone off when you pump gas for fear of electric pulses catching gas on fire, but do you actually turn it off each time? Probs not

Do you guys live with a really big, neurotic, construction worker? Sometimes he even gets to decide stuff. I know what will happen when we are getting ready to walk out the door - the thing will be unplugged.
I don't want to debate the safety - heck I agree - I want to decide on the best option 2.

IME if you partially dry them and then finish later you could reduce the potency. Just wait until you get back. FYI I have the same dehydrator and it never takes me 12 hours to reach cracker dry. Maybe my shrooms are smaller than your though IDK, your mileage may vary. Good luck!

Yeah, they're safe, because they're made for home operation for several hours at a time. I've run mine on carpet for as long as 24hours straight. Because the element is small, and at the top of the unit, it doesn't get really dangerous. Like, at all. A hairdryer is much more dangerous IMO.
Anyways. You will lose some potency. Best to harvest right into the dehydrator. But if you gotta wait, you gotta wait. Try to start the process I'd say.

haha fair enough. the longer they stay wet, the higher chance of potency degradation. while i literally have NO IDEA what starting the process for 4 hours and then stopping and restarting later will do.. IF the mushrooms are mostly dry by that time, it shouldnt hurt much more than if you left them outside of the dehydrator and worked on it all at once.
my only advice is to get them cracker dry as soon as possible. if that means starting now, and finishing later. perhaps thats the best option number 2 for now :p

You can stick them in the fridge in a paper bag or put them in front of a fan, run them for a while then resume its up to you. In that short of a time frame of just a few hours it wouldn't affect anything noticeably but the faster they are dried the better. Sometimes we harvest a tub, jam the dehydrator packed full and have another tub to harvest. Fruits go into a paper bag and into the fridge until the others are dry.

Step 1: procure paper bag Step 2: put fresh mushrooms into paper bag Step 3: put paper bag in fridge
In the fridge mushrooms will stay fresh and hopefully not degrade tooo much before you get back home. Ive had to store fresh mush in the fridge for lack of drying space and all was fine in the end.

Sounds like my girlfriend she won't even leave clothing in the dryer while not at home. Maybe plugging it into a surge strip and running it away from anything flammable and sitting in a safe spot like on the stove will alleviate some concerns. The goal is cracker dry ASAP for best preservation of potency. Do not store them in any type of air tight container while even a little bit wet. They will mold that way very fast. It's very important to get any fruits cracker dry. Maybe consider storing the fresh fruits in a paper bag in the fridge a few days until the time comes that you can be at home while they are in the dehydrator?

When I used to do a big grow I would literally have to run a couple dehydrators for a week straight. Wouldn't even turn it off, just load the next batch from the fridge. Course I was burning them out at a pretty crazy rate then as well.

just tell your "construction worker"(who should know it's fine more than us) friend to fuck off and let you dry them if he wants any damn mushrooms that you grew. problem solved =]

Looks like all this banter was for nothing - my guys are so little they are going to be dry before i leave tonight.
Now I just need to figure out why the poor things are so anemic (They didn't look quite so tiny until the dryer got a hold of em.)

If your dryer will do 160F use that temp. It's the autobahn of dehydrating. Reasonable size batches can be done in 4 - 6 hrs.

The heating element won't cause a fire. A short circuit will. Ever hear of christmas tree fires? They aren't started by the heat of the light bulbs...

Christmas trees are dry and strings of lights often have nicks and other defects due to crappy manufacturing. Dehydrators are made for extended use. The likely hood of one burning down your house is pretty low.

Yea the odds are low. They are low for christmas trees too but a lot more people have those so you hear about it more... I run mine when I'm not at home, but I can see why someone isn't willing to take a risk when the consequence is your house burning down. My dad wouldn't even let me run a lava lamp overnight when I was in high school.
