Well maybe, I'm sure people have tried, but why? You'll have a hard time finding something safer, cheaper, and as effective. I humbly suggest that you learn the way the tek is intended before you try substitutions.
Edit: I just did a quick search with the search engine. If you really want to try, people have had mixed results with moisture control potting mix, coir, and peat moss. Perhaps someone who has tried it will come along and give you better advice. Good luck!

You may be able to experiment with coir, but you'd have to figure out the recipe.
I've seen maybe a couple of success with perlite, but it's usually a fail.
There's no substitute for verm, but cubes can be grown on a lot of stuff if prepped right.
search "bottle tek"

Verm is cheap and easy to get. 10 bucks or less home depot, Walmart, etc. And its useful for bulk too. Great stuff to have around.

As a beginner, it's best to stick to the tried and true methods and recipes.
