Anyone ever seen this? Good bad?
    #23363390 - 06/20/16 10:12 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hey everyone! I was checking my first BRF cakes and i noticed one seems very healthy, but it seems to have colonized the verm layer.. I didnt even think that was possible!

I can also see some white fuzz looking stuff which im guessing is mycelium coming thru the 4 holes on the lid.

Is this normal? Good? Bad?

Beside that the jar is the farthest one along out of all 12.. Already lightly colonized the bottom!

Plz let me know from your experiences!

it can happen, but i have never seen it through the holes.. so idk. sometimes it will have thin myc strings reaching towards to verm, and colonizing it a bit, but since it seems to have colonized it that much, keep an eye on it. might be something else. if you see it turn green, its fucked. super fast growth can be a giveaway, sometimes. so since it is growing much faster than the rest, could be contam. just watch it close.

mybe the verm layer just shifted a bit, and that is just brf? how thick ws you verm layer?

Yeah ill check it everyday.
The verm is about an inch thick. You have a good point tho.. It could have just shifted.
What about the rest of the jar looking that fuzzy/cloudy white? That a characteristic of contam?

Its only one jar so thats not a big loss if it is.

If it is just colonizing the verm that means the verm must of gotten a bit moist right? Rendering it a useless filter?

well.. no, not always. sometimes it just colonized some fo the verm. its looking for food in all directions. it shouldnt colonize the verm as much as it would the brf/verm/water mix but it can still colonize it a bit. usualy after the jar is completely colonized, you will have to rinse off the verm, and some of it will be colonized, but it will still fall off fairly easy.

now, if it did get really moist, then mold can grow on it, and thats no good. that is wht i would be worried about. especially with being able to see growth through the inoc holes. so just watch it. if it turns green, then toss it. youll know in a few days.

People are only "snobs" when folks ask questions that signify they're not trying hard enough.

Those do look weird though, I'm not 100% sure that's mycelium you see through the jar holes.

Do you have any micropore tape?  I would suggest covering the holes on your lid with one layer.  It will still breath but may keep contaminates from landing on the exposed myc.  The mycelium is contam resistant (so is anything else that is colonized, for that matter) but exposed myc will eventually dry out and become a vector for contams. Its worth a shot.
At least it is only one jar.
One more bit of useful info for the prep stage is to take a clean, dry paper towel and wipe the inside rim of the jar before you add the dry verm.  You probably got some brf on the side of the rim and the myc is eating it up.

Yeah i actually went ahead and taped em hoping itd slow down a little incase it is myc. I dont wanna birth one cake.

Also unfortunately i bought these jars, and im sure it was the shipping process that maybe got the verm damp.

I know, i know how silly to buy when its cake to make (hahaha CAKE). I just wanted to see how it all worked for the first time..
Anyway i wont buy them again ill make my own with some LC instead of spores.

Dude, brf is soooo easy.  Get some brown rice and grind it in a coffee grinder and mix with verm, hydrate to field capacity.
I bought some grow kit when I first started and never had good results.
So now I understand your problem.  Stuff got mixed up during shipping.  Not a big deal, just use the tape.  I would just keep the tape on the lid holes and let it grow.  Don't use regular tape use medical tape, or any kind if medical tape that looks like it was woven.  Micro pore tape is just a brand name but anything like it is ideal.
Nice pun BTW.  Don't worry about it too much, it looks healthy.

The cool thing about pf tek though is that you CAN fruit one cake at a time, unlike spawn where you have to wait until they are a done.
On a contradictory note, cake do perform better in groups but I doubt your one cake is gonna fly by the rest

Dude i know! Growkits suck. All the info is intimidating so you think youll do better with em but NO! Its not even any TEK on here i dont think. Lol i hate it.
So i just used the jars and put the rest of the pointless shit in the closet. After 12 days of the jars colonizing ive been reading and wanna do bulk already.. Start two at once so im always busy!
