Making electronic music on a budget
    #23362771 - 06/20/16 03:57 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

I know a lot of people here dabble and I feel I am sorely missing out, it being 2016 and me not having got into making electronic music yet.

It's astounding that so many artists base their electronic music on templates of almost identical "boom boom" music, and the crowds still lap it up.

This is the case in many genres but template sounding electronic drum fills starting a song is not exactly earth shattering although it can be.

The musical changes behind all the effects would make Mozart cry. Let's throw a minor chord in there. Anyone on mdma is going to feel this music,  even on their goosebumps.

That's not in every case and it also doesn't matter a lot of the time as long as it fits the mood of the music.

My luck with cracking files hasn't been happening.

Which programs do you use?

FL?

Cubase?

Logic?

Reason?

Do you use a keyboard too?

Although I don't listen to much electronic music, I don't forget those who made a strong impression on me, and whose albums perfectly fit a really nice time and place. Brian Eno and Aphex Twin's ambient stuff come to mind.

Feel free just to mention anything that has helped you on your way.

Cheers.

I use FL studio with a variety of third party plug ins. The plug ins I've gotten the most out of have been Kontakt (with a huge library for it), Sylenth1 (it's a basic synth, but I use it for the giant preset collections that have been made for it over time. I have like 20,000 presets for it alone), and Serum (a much better synth program, I use this one to make my own sounds rather than defaulting to presets most of the time).

Omnisphere 2 is also a really good synth, and has a rather large library of sample sounds that you can mix with synth elements. One of the best vst's out there once you get into the workings of it.

I have a pretty big collection of samples for drum sounds as well. Before I would use these a lot, but have used Kontakt for a lot of my drum stuff in the last year or so.

I ripped ableton and cracked it

I've used midi controllers and synthesizers. But I've come to realize that I do more with my mouse and keyboard more than anything else, especially with ableton. When I was using Reason I was doing more midi controller action.

If anything I'd invest in a synthesizer with a few drum pads on it

Crack ableton and get yourself a basic midi controller. You could even skip the midi controller if you're REALLY on a budget, but for me anyway, it helps.

It's so worth getting over the learning curve. If you have any inclination towards music whatsoever you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. It's such a rewarding hobby.

Ableton! I make rock music mainly but ableton is awesome for everything, even though the sounds and samples are more geared towards electronic music.

I really want to make electronic music, and it would have to be on a budget, so this is helpful.  I think music is a talent that I have been gifted with, never had to practice at all, it just came naturally to me, but anything where I can create beats, and slowly add to those beats to create a whole song, would be awesome.

I don't plan on doing any vocal stuff, just music would be cool.

If anyone here is okay with cracked software, and ripped sample libraries, the following site is a godsend. It has - by far - the largest collection of music making resources available in one spot.

It's a warez site, so everything is uploaded to a file host that you may have to pay for a premium membership to. If you are only downloading software though, most software is small enough in size that a free membership will work just as well. Premium memberships only come in handy if you're downloading like a Terabyte of stuff over the course of a few weeks.

The website is:

If u wanna go super budget, u could download Audacity (free) then buy a CD (or torrent it) that has samples on it. Sample CDs are like under 20$.

Then use Audacity to make a copy/paste/effects song using just your samples. With enough effort, u could make a track.

I have used Audacity for editing tracks and "remixing" tracks too, its a lot of fun and quite versitile for a free program.

Also want to point out that the site I posted has plenty of professional tutorial rips as well so you can delve into that as well. If you're fine with pirating that is.

I've been producing music with Ableton for about 6-7 years now.

All you need to get started is a DAW and midi keyboard.  You can honestly just use your computer keyboard and use z and x to change octaves if you really want.

I use a launchpad sometimes and sometimes my midi keyboard.  The launchpad is good when you already have clips created but you can also use it as a keyboard too but the notes are laid out differently than a keyboard.

I also have an audio interface and I record live instruments and sample them through Ableton, manipulate, layer etc.

My next hardware is probably going to be a Maschine.  I've had an MPD32 and it was alright, but it just felt like a drum pad to me and not really what I was looking for.

I use a lot of samples.  Rip audio from video games, movies, outside, everything.    I've put a microphone up to my throat and recorded myself humming, put effects on it and it sounded like a Trumpet.  I've recorded myself hitting sticks against trees outside and used that as percussion, I took that same sample, sped it up and it sounded like a harp.

Just be creative.

Sound is amazing, you can do anything with it, create sounds no one has heard before. Personally, Ableton is a perfect program to quickly record ideas, loop, layer and produce music.

edit: I torrent a lot of my drum samples.  You can torrent packs that come with bass sounds, kicks, hi hats etc.  But you can also purchase samples from sites online.

I guess you could say downtempo instrumentals.

But it really depends on what i'm working on or who i'm working with.

But it's mostly hip hop influenced.

Nice. Downtempo is an awesome genre.

I tried to make a hip hop track in Fruit Loops. I made one semi good one. Its hard to do.

EDM is so much easier, props to the hip hop artists making those beats :yesnod:

If you are serious about making good music, but hesitant to spend thousands on several synthesizers and audio programs, look no further than a Korg Kaossilator.
