Sterilize without a PC?

Hi, I've always wanted to start a grow but I don't have access to a pressure cooker.
Is there a way that I can sterilize my jars without a PC? I have access to other extremely high heat methods, is it just a matter of heating the piss out of the jars to sterilize or does the pressure play a part? Like maybe if i can use a torch to heat up the jars without them breaking would that be okay?
Thx.

What's the ideal heat I'm looking for? Obviously above 100 c if a standard boil won't do the justice

The sterilization of grains requires a combination of pressure and heat. I had some success when I started growing gourmet mushrooms years ago and didn't have a PC, but the success rate was a lot lower - maybe 1 out of 4 grows worked. Eventually I just got frustrated and bought a PC, worth every cent.

i think you should invest in a PC. while id just buy a new presto or mirro on walmart.com. you could also search CL listings for some VERY cheap PC's. ive seen AA's go for 100$, and prestos for $20. i always miss the amazing deals though personally lol.
but if youre on a budget and you have a bit of time to search, the options are out there!

No I don't because it should pay for itself on first harvest but that's just me. You could look for a Pressure cooker at a garage sell or something. Even go to Walmart wait all day till someone buys a pressure cooker and ask for their receipt when they leave.go grab a pressure cooker for free and you have a receipt.
The possibilities are endless. Acquire pressure cooker!
Just try and pay for it as I can't condone you to steal

they aren't massively expensive though. just get a small one capable of 15psi and you're sorted

buddy they are as cheap as 20$ for the small ones. and thats all you need at this point. and the increased sterility produced by a PC is most definitely a NECESSARY component to growing mushrooms PROPERLY.
also while i dont condone selling illegal substances...... like the poster above mentioned. ONE flush and youll have more than what you invested in the cooker in worth of mushrooms lol. even without really selling them off, you could just have a few friends throw you 20-30$ for a nice trip you know? boom, now you can upgrade to a better PC and more equipment if you plan to ever do it again!
my 2c, good luck buddy (:

personally id say its 100% required. some will say otherwise. but in my experience, sterility and proper technique are the number one factors in growing mushrooms properly. well that and a few other things. but sterility is the MOST important.

does not require PC. ideal for "getting your feet wet"
if that doesn't work, try the torch

Thanks!
Anyone know what temp I should aim for? Preferably in C
Does it matter if I cook the substrate? Is it even possible to cook it?

No I mean, you use a PC so you can reach higher than 100c, I was asking if it's better to sterilize in a hotter than 100c temp if I don't use the PC

You can steam sterilize pf jars http://mushroomvideos.com/ has a guide on how to. I hear that grains can be done with the same process but requires 8 hours! Even with the 8 hours it's a questionable process with a higher failure rate from my understanding. Stick to pf tek and follow those videos. A PC is the best investment to ensure sterility and there are not many practical ways around that. You need the pressure and the heat in combination to achieve best results.

but i do agree to get a PC. you can spend $20 on a cheap one, that will fit (i think) 4-5 half pints. at least i got my first one at bed bath and beyond(or the other one, i really cant remember haha, always mix them up) for $20 and it fit em. it will at least work for "getting feet wet". and you will most likely have less wasted time on contam.
