Straw pellets and alder chips (2-4mm) for shiitake?

I have some grain spawn with shiitake and am thinking about the next step.
What do you think about using straw pellets and 2-4mm alder chips for shiitake? I can get those easily around here. Does a 50/50 dry weight mix of those sound ok? Should I have any verm or gypsum or hydrated lime or something too. I have crushed clamshells if that's of any use.
I was thinking of hydrating the substrate for ~24h and them pasteurizing in the oven.
Does it sound like a somewhat ok plan?

You won't need verm, 50/50 sounds fine to start, although you might find other ratios better. Checkout Gr0wer's posts, he has some good growing guides and teks.

I'm experimenting with straw pellets too after seeing solarity mention hes using them, I'm hopeful they work well as processing straw is so messy and laborious.
Shiitake works on straight straw or wood chips so anything in between I imagine would work okay, I would add gypsum for sure.

I've had numerous failed grows of oysters with straw pellets due to the fact I've had too much water. But I've learned a little every time so hopefully I can dial it in this time.

Its not always too much water, sometimes its the substrates ability to hold water content. With paper pellets I can hold 80% (4 parts) water, with no issues.
Easy way to work it out, 'x' the amount of dry substrate.
x 1 Substrate : 1 Part(s) : 50% Water x 2 Substrate : 2 Part(s) : 66% Water x 3 Substrate : 3 Part(s) : 75% Water x 4 Substrate : 4 Part(s) : 80% Water
Find whats right for your sub.

My straw pellets just arrived so I'm making up a 100% straw pellet substrate to see what happens, gonna keep it simple and just pour boiling water into a tub and mix the spawn in when cool.
1:2.5 straw pellets:water + 2% gypsum and will spawn pink oyster at 5%.
total inoculated substrate: 8.3KG

You really want some wheat bran in there. It will really boost performance.

How much bran would you use? I was planning on adding hpoo if I manage to get pellets only to work.

No hpoo, shiitake like 20% bran by dry weight.

You should measure water and pellets by weight. It's gonna end up looking like car puke if it's too wet and it will look dry when it's just right. 600g water to 400g pellets is the proper ratio.

14 days after inoculation with my 100% straw pellet sub.
try 1:2.5 pellets to water ratio (by weight) seems to work well.
