There's a lot of bacteria that are basically immortal too if you could supply them with nutrient and take the waste away.
For fungi the mating types are out on the telomeres of the chromosomes and are thus fragile with age

Well, I do like to ninja edit. Sometimes I've gone too hard on a noob and I need to dial back a peg. Sometimes I realize I left out a really good burn and I gotta tack that on at the end. Sometimes I just mistype something or use words that sound stupid together and don't realize it til I reread the post after it's submitted. Ninja editing is the shit.

I do this as well dood. Sometimes it just flies out and its perfect and other times I reread it and say to myself "What the fuck was I doing?" then I quick edit that and fix the mistakes. I will say my grammar isn't perfecto by any means.

Who says it dies, depending on the conditions it sould last quite some time. Ive actually got 1.5 yr old dryed out samples(pastyplates) that were stored in a shoe box. Started back with the exception of just a couple days extra growth time.
Check out this craziness. 1.5 yrs old pan cam lc. No refrigeration and in the same shoe box with weird ass growths in it. Suprisingly clean and tested on agar.

even keeping a single culture alive forever is impossible. while it will take some time, senescence(?) will take over after awhile and growth will become minute/dead EVENTUALLY. not an expert on this process, but i know SOME science i think.

Well of course if you keep growing the same culture over and over it will catch senescence and become dead or slow eventually. Like doing a g2g over and over. But the question was why cant it cant it live forever. I believe it can with the correct storage and manipulation of the culture. If its stored correctly its technically still alive, just dormant. Personally Idk how long theshelf life on dry or even powdered mycelium samples would last. But I could imagine just by my research that the shelf life would last well beyond 2yrs. Refrigerated samples could last 20 or even a lifetime. I would suspect longer.

If you have a cryo freezer -60 -70C you can store cultures longer than a lifetimelifetime. There's a special procedure for putting them in and taking them out
