Why can't mycelium stay alive forever?

You know gow there's a mushroom in Oregon that's been living for years? How come you can't keep stacking cakes and adding nutrients for it to keep growing and eventually have a fat ass cake? Why does mycelium die?

without seeming like a dick. i think this might be the right answer to this question lol.
unless youre looking for some scientific reason mycelium in specific, doesnt live forever? but thats going a bit far if you ask me. once a plant or a mold has gone through its cycles and run out of hydration and nutrients; it dies.

But technically like the honey mushroom in oregon if theres a continuous amount of nutrients it will keep growing right? Also how come people recommend crumbling spent cakes in soil? How do they not contaminate?

fully colonized myc is super resistant to contamination. also, dirt in the ground outside has a LOT of antibacterials and mold resistance in general. so spreading spent cakes outdoors in a patch of dirt is a GREAT way to get more mushrooms out of your spent mycelium. but that doesnt mean its living forever lol. youre just getting as much out of it as humanly possible.

It's not because fully colonized mycelium is resistant to contamination that you can spawn spent cakes outside... Spent cakes are not very resistant to contamination. It's because growing outside is easier compared to indoors due to the balanced microbiological ecosystem. Mold can't take over a huge spot of soil in the ground because the soil was never sterilized and mold was never allowed to get a foothold. Mold would be too busy fighting the millions of other organisms in the soil, and anything that already had a huge chunk of living mycelium would immediately have a head start. When you spawn cakes outside it's not really the cakes/substrates that are fruiting anymore, so much as the soil you spawned them to. It's called super spawning and it's really only effective outside.

Especially since the genes you're using all germinated at inoc.
I'd imagine the honey mushroom patch in Oregon is spreading out into much younger patches and anastomosis would prolong senescence.
Technically mycelium could last forever if it wasn't growing anymore. Like in a fridge
