SGFC - How does she look?
    #23360462 - 06/19/16 10:44 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hello Again!

So this is day two inside the SGFC... I only have 4 cakes in her right now as the other ones are still consolidating.

-There is no water droplets forming on the walls - from what I've read however, that is a good thing. (I believe I read a post from RR that said a correctly built SGFC will not have condensation on the walls and that the condensation is not from water evaporation but from temperature gradients.)
-Fanning/misting about 4-5 times a day. Misting the perlite directly and making the cakes glisten by misting about 4-5 feet above the chamber and letting it fall onto the cakes.
-Water droplets on the sides of the chamber disappear in about 30-45 mins.
-Cakes are sitting on aluminum foil 'plates'. Let me know if I should get rid of those...
-You can see two different grades of perlite in her. I made the mistake of buying too small of a bag on the first go around and could only find coarse grade afterwords. Now I have a bag of perlite that's so large I could probably create a chamber out of my bathroom....with 5 inches of perlite on the floor... hehe
-I wet the perlite by first rinsing in a colander, after it was in the chamber I ran water right into the chamber and allowed it to drain properly overnight through the holes in the bottom of the tub. This was before cakes were in it.

Pictures below - let me know if I'm missing something!

looks good to me. Some people might comment about the opaque lid and that it might not give them enough light or too much side lighting. I find that indirect light of even low intensity works fine on my bulk grows. Other than that you are spot on IMO.

the lid is fine. looks good

you can group those cakes closer to each other, though. since it is such a big tub, and only those 4.

Thanks for the comments!

Should I place the cakes directly on the perlite? Will the aluminum foil cause any issues? I wouldn't think it would... I do notice that there is water pooling up on the foil. I don't really like that too much, but I might be over-reacting.

Can I toss more cakes in even though they are not on the same 'cycle'?

Thanks for your time.

no, leave them on foil. do not put on perlite. yes you can put more cakes in. trim the foil back a bit if it is pooling too much, but it shouldnt cause a huge problem.

At the rate their going- I'm thinking late 2027... hehe

Maynard is probably planting grapes in Antarctica as we speak.
I tasted Maynard's wine once....it was like liquid Tool.

-------------------------------------------------

I trimmed back the foil on those cakes. I've got 4 others that are about to go in tomorrow as well. Watch them all magically flush at once. Hehe.

I'm going to get some prints off of these and probably go Monotub for a bit.
Horse Manure or Straw I'm thinking. I've never had the best of luck with cakes. What's your tek of choice at the moment?

Put the cakes closer to the center.

My idea on putting them near the edge is so that they will benefit from the micro-climate created against the wall. This can be achieved by placing them in the center as well. Is there an advantage of placing them in the center? If so, what is the advantage?

In the center, they won't dry out quite as fast. I'd move them within a couple inches of each other in the center.

:whathesaid:
Them being close to each other in the center will create a better microclimate that the walls will... You want to get them as close as you can without the foil blocking the perlite for now... That is what has worked best for me.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I feel like need an analog hygrometer, as I'm worried about the humidity in there.

I think I'm just anxious and impatient though, everything is more than likely just fine. From what I've read, SGFC's are hard to screw up...

I notice that I'm getting good evaporation when I come back to fan/mist. Also, I am fanning right after I get the cakes misted to try and promote some evaporation in that way as well. (I'm letting the fine mist fall onto the cakes from about 4-5 feet.)

Now I'm just waiting on some pins!

Which is the part everyone is most impatient for... hehe

you dont need a hygrometer.. just relax and be patient. mist when dry. eyes are better than a hygrometer, because it cant measure the microclimate at the cake's surface, where it matters.

Thanks Mupet!

I will update with pics after a change is visible.

However, I am convinced that these things won't pin for another 4-5 years....
:breakout:

haha, just be patient =p it does take a while, but after they pin, the growth goes super fast.

Yepp.

I remember from my previous grow how incredibly fast they grew.

After these jars it's time to go back to casing layers and monotubs...

I'm good with those teks, just not so good with cakes.
