Finally my first pins! *pics* and progress (update: black pins???)

I made up 10 1/4 pint jars of brf cakes. After I dunked and rolled I left them in my fc for 3 weeks or so with no sign of pins. I had lots of ariel myc that ended up flattening out and turning hard. I was going to give up on them but decided to try one last shot at casing them. Broke the cakes put and cased with a bottom layer of verm/perlite mix and a top 1/4 inch layer of verm at field capacity. A week later I checked on my casing and it looked like it was growing myc again so I patched it up and threw it in my sgfh. Misted once a day and gave 12/12 light. A week later finally getting my first pins!! I'm so excited. Thanks everyone on the forums I've learned so much and done so much reading. My next grow I'm going to case right off the bat with some wbs after taking a spore print from these fellas.

Now I just checked the sides of the casing tray and descovered mushrooms growing on the outside of the tub. If I want to get another flush from this casing, how do I go about removing these mushrooms and aborts from the sides without ruining the mycelium network?

Day 2

Day 3

Day 4

1/4 pint brf cakes got some stubbies on em. I don't think these will get much bigger than that. Prolly what you get for using 1/4 pints rather than half but they still look pretty cool! My casing is already showing signs of life again
and 8 hours later I harvested
Cake no2 Happy with this fairly large fruit hanging off the top. One of the biggest yet! Unfortunately noticed a black pin head. And removed it right away... [Strike]Sign of contamination??? Just an abort

Here's a cluster I picked off as a bunch And also the biggest shroom harvested yet!

Pick the ones on the top then put a plate or something over the top of the cake and flip it. The cake will land upside down on the plate where you can then pick the ones on the bottom off. Then put the tub back over the cake and flip it back over like nothing ever happened

Hey guys, just checked on my batch again and noticed that there is a little tear in the veil of one of my shrooms.
Does this mean it's going to break early?
What can I do to avoid this?
And lastly am I allowed to pick just one and let the others grow till their veils break as well? Or do I have to remove everything and wait for a second flush? Here's a progress pic (these things grow fast woo)
The little black spot under the veil is where it's torn. Other than that it's still intact

you cant really avoid it breaking early if its going to break early lol. if it breaks TOO early and looks like its about to drop spores, id cut the head off or just take that particular mushy out.

How about if the sides are more mature than the top?
Before I started using liners I had a tub that slowly kept rising over a few days. Wtf, right? Well, I dumped the sub in a trash bag to throw away after my second flush and found the biggest fattest shroom I have ever seen! It was contaminated with bacteria though and smelled horrible. It was growing underneath the entire time, and I never knew it. It could have easily been 5 grams dry....

This morning I checked and the veil had completely opened. I took the single shroom out and got a spore print from it by the time I got home. The other mushrooms are maturing nicely and I'm hoping the veils will actually break soon because I have some monsters growing under the sub that look ready to harvest but I can't get at them till I pick the whole lot. Here's a pic of the tub now if anyone cares to see.
 Day three
Some of the mushrooms growing on the sides have changed their paths and started growing out the top. Smart little devils I'm so pleased with these

I don't think there's much you can do other than wait. I'm hoping the ones on the sides will still be good when I go to harvest. But I figured it would be the same as an invitro grow and no harm done. That's hilarious tho. I can imaging the cake just rising out of the container like.. ahem.. magic. How long did you wait before you notice the one on the bottom?

Woke this morning to see that most veils have broken. I picked the whole lot. Got six caps making prints. Very pleased and excited to see what the next flush has in store

Congrats on your first flush
I maximized the image of your harvest and noticed around 25-30 of the mushrooms you picked were pretty far from mature. Your overall yield would of been much higher had you waited, and just harvested the ones that had the veil breaking/falling. Go to the store and get an X-Acto knife. You can cut the mature mushrooms at the base of the stem, and this will allow the others to finish.
Some people leave stumps on the substrate but I like to pick the stumps as well once the rest of the mushrooms have been harvested. It has been said stumps can cause contamination more so then divots. When you pick a stump, just clean/tear off the base until you have nothing but bruised mushroom stem and dry it with everything else. Eating stumps with old rye/verm/perlite on them is no fun, and may cause an upset stomach.

That sounds like a pain in the ass. Just twist n pull, then using scissors or fiskars snip off the butt into a bucket or trash can. Far easier.

What I meant was if you have a cluster, and you want to harvest the mushrooms that have matured faster then the rest, you can cut the mature mushroom at the base. Once all of the cluster is mature and harvested you can go back and pick the stumps. Sometimes the stump comes with the rest of the cluster, sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks for the info I'll definitely keep that in mind next flush! Hopefully there won't be anything too big growing on the bottom of the cake which was my main reason for clearing the top. But I guess another 12 hours or so wouldn't have hurt antrying. Also I was sure I read somewhere to pick everything before next flush but that may have been for cakes before dunking. I stand by my theory that mushrooms that are torn stimulate the mycelium to produce more fruits and make for good subsequent flushes. It's what happens in the wild, anyway, just a shitload faster.
Edit to add: I've noticed over time, too, that those of you who twist and pull get unexpected side and bottom pins.

very nice congrats buddy!
i agree with what someone else mentioned though. you can let the veils break a little more and the caps to fan out just slightly more before spores start dropping. will make for prettier mushies and higher yields

Thankyou! I actually just finished harvesting and dunking the cake that was behind the casing. (I left the tini wini pins on for the dunk there were about 7) Do you think I should have waited until morning for this one? Im worried I may be jumping the gun on the harvesting here...
A lot of the smaller shrooms had opened completely and the largest ones looked like they were ready to open any minute...

Ahaha I know right! Not bad for a 1/4 pinter eh? Had to give it a proper photo shoot before picking at it. And thanks I'll make sure to let the caps fan out on the next cake and see how she goes. Its only 2 or three days behind that one anyway

Hey yall. So my second cake has been fruiting the biggest shroom I've seen so far... problem (maybe) I noticed a pin growing from my cake with a black head on it today. I didn't like the look of it so I removed it from the cake and the pin head just smushed in my hand.
Does this black pin indicate that the cake is contaminated? Are all my mushies now at risk of contamination?
I removed the cake from the fruiting chamber just in case in the meantime.. here's a pic
You can see the black pin growing above another mushroom there on the left hand side (above)
