Subs with white edge on caps?
    #23359894 - 06/19/16 04:57 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I'm pretty sure these are subs and the photo is shitty, but all I really want to know is whether the have a thin white edge to the cap sometimes like the one pictured?

Eastern Melbourne VIC Australia btw

Try taking a picture with an even and neutral background.

I'm basically certain you have a sub. If the stem is very firm when you try to bend it then you can be more confident that it's a sub and if there's also blueing then you can be even more confident that it's a sub.

I think moisture levels, sun levels and age all effect what colour the cap will be. For example I find that when its been raining and overcast for a few days the new subs have dark brown caps...

With that confusing background and lack of focus it is hard to tell, but I think I see streaks of rust brown
on the stem. I'd like to see better pictures including a gill shot to either dismiss or confirm my suspicions
of a Cortinarius sp.

Dudes. All I want to know about is the white on the edge of the cap. everything else is just like the subs I normally pick. I just haven't noticed that thin white edge to the cap before?

Camera just won't focus, but you can see the white on the edge of the cap in the shitty blurry photo

I have seen pictures of Psilocybe subaeruginosa with a whitish cap margin.

Point is, you say you're "pretty sure" you have the right species - not 100%.
So when asking for judgment based on a picture - well, the picture should
show all distinctions clearly. In this case, the picture is quite useless, sorry.

Next step in the process is 1) either get a sufficient picture, or 2) make the
final judgment yourself.

However I'm quite sure you can trick the camera into giving you better focus.
Put the mushroom on a white paper, use natural light or a flash if you have,
putting a thin white piece of paper in front of the flash lamp can help avoiding
"wash-out" effects.

Cool. I can't right at the moment, but I'll take another pic later.
