fix my outdated info please! (noc'ing jars tonight)
    #23357287 - 06/18/16 09:15 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

ok ok ok, so i got a lot of shit when i mentioned that i use a TiT to incubate. im finding that i really am way out of date, and i need some help. ive done a ton of new research that has sort of blown me away, but please correct my old ass if im wrong on any of the following.

after i noc my jars, ive always kept them in total darkness, within a TiT set at 76-78F. im going to lower the temp to 74 this time in order to be safe. i will also set HALF my jars outside the TiT as a test.

what i have learned only recently, is that the myc growing within the jars will actually PREFER a 12/12 light cycle?!?! this personally blew me away. when i started this out, people told me it was light that started pinning! now im hearing that its all about just having the most vital conditions for fruiting in order to start pins. and that light has nothing to do with it! (well not nothing, but you know..)

anyway i suppose the new way is to simply place your jars in a room with indirect sunlight?

will this indirect sunlight actually help the myc grow more healthily within my master jars?

also learned that sidepins had nothing to do with not having a liner lol. that its solely due to the best micro-climate forming along the edges. ive always used a simple black trash bag as a liner, and have noticed that it shrinks WITH my substrate. thus keeping the side area from becoming the best micro-climate for the mushies. so while my info was outdated i suppose my technique was still correct :p

does anyone recommend something other then/or better than simple trash bags? ive heard some mention 6-8mil plastic liner bought at hardware stores etc.

thirdly, greenhouses. ive been looking into building one for a while and finally am taking the leap. id always thought the most elaborately build GH's were the most efficient. im finding now that this may not be the case at all. while building a GH sophisticated isnt a bad thing, it may not be all that necessary. after reading up a few teks i think im going to do what Frank does..

simply place an ultrasonic in the GH chamber. and then place an evaporative humidifier at the base near an opening for FAE and better RH on my substrates. find a timer cycle that works for my specific grow space, and voila. working GH?

there are a few other outdated things ive noticed myself learning about recently, but i cant seem to think anything up at the moment. (agar and LC stuff mostly. also some stuff about grains and the use of tyvek or self-healing injection ports etc.) if anyone has ANY tips for me on my next grow, please let me know. im looking to go outside my comfort zone a bit this time and try some new stuff (still mainly sticking to the mono's i know well, and then trying small GH's). im also being very over-ambitious and doing way more jars than i should. but hell, i love it (;

edit - just saw a picture with someone using synthetic filter discs on top of his jars instead of just poly-fil filled 1/4" holes.

is this a far better method? worth the investment? how long do SFD's last/how many uses?

im already positive just poly-fil works wonders. its worked for me since the start of my mushroom career. but again, just seeing what other options exist and if they are better or worse in the general communities opinion (:

I do not use these kind of tubs, I use regular monos, but the point is the same, and you nailed it, liners.

If you line the bottom with a thin and cheap trash bag liner, you can trim off the excess when your done mixing.

This accomplishes 2 things, for one it makes it less messy, and 2 it helps reduce/eliminate side pinning.

People used to think light was the cause of side pinning, so they taped the bottoms of the tubs.

But that is not the case, FAE hitting the sides causes side pins, so to eliminate them, use a trash bag liner that will shrink with the substrate, eliminating the microclimate and stopping FAE from hitting the sides of the substrate.

vs a greenhouse with all your eggs in one FC. each monotub could be 5-8oz first flush, up to you on still wanting a GH

indirect light is always fine for colonization, even fruiting, but for fruiting I like a 27W CFL about a foot away in a reflector bulb holder thing

polyfil works great so do SFDs

the GH is mostly going to be for my gourmet species specifically. but its also a project ive been meaning to do for a long time. ive also already bought all the materials needed so it would be a shame NOT to do it at this point lol.

ill have around 4 monotubs running this time around as well anyway. hopefully more but 4 is a good starting point for this grow especially if im pushing for the GH as well. (keep in mind i have a very willing and cooperative wife who helps me with almost ALL the steps. this makes the whole process immensely easier lol. without her i dont think id have the ambition or the means to do such a large grow off the bat!)
