Does cold pasturation work well for cubes? I plan with spawn to spare make two 66 qt monotub with straw 6 inches deep and half a brick of coir for casing?

I've heard with straw you should soak for a few hours in warm soapy water to strip off the waxy layer on the outside.
Then, you can rinse them off, mix with your substrate and pasteurize everything together in a large oven bag.
Remember, keep the temps between 140-160f for 1 hour.
Using a meat thermometer is the way to go.

lets pretend it works well….(i have had poor results, but put that aside)

why would u want to?  what benefit would this have over heat pasteurization unless ur doing very large amounts of straw? a 140f water bath takes an hour tops.  cold pasteurization takes anywhere from 6-24hours, depending on who u ask. that does not include draining time/waiting to spawn.

i just don't think its anything beyond pure novelty for a cube grow unless ur processing straw on a large scale…in which case i'd turn to composting or steaming before lime (for cubes)

give her a whirl if u want…definitely use coir on top at spawning…1/2"(not sure if thats a half brick, but u'll figure it out)

i only tried it twice (one log, one tub), and ran out of interest, so hopefully u will have better results.

Warm soapy water first then 140-160f for an hour

Otherwise it's warm not hot soapy water + lime or bleach or caustic.
Then skip the 140-160f pasteurization. This takes longer anyway...

Never tried chemical pasteurization straw with cubes

I read an article that said that oysters did best on straw pasteurized with heat. This is not the same article I read I think but it shows the same findings as the one I read a few months ago.

ive never used straw yet so i wont say anything for sure. just wanted to chime in. im going to use RR's method he outlines in his video series DVD. seems easy enough and if RR says it works, im inclined to believe him :p

great DVD by the way for those who havent seen it. lots of amazing information. wish i had seen it years ago!
