I have seen a lot of brutal rape scenes in them, usually followed shortly after by the rapists grisly murder

Also a lot of general violence and battles, usually with some interesting plot though.

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Visually many of them aren't that great, most of them were British and focused around occult themes. The American horror comics were more about Native Americans, voodoo and skeleton cowboys etc.

What separates them from the rest is that they were printed in the pre-comic code authority days, so many of them had negative endings, and were just generally twisted.

Code came in mid 50's. EC is pre code, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, Shock Suspense Stories. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority ; After the code ec just concentrated on Mad Magazine.

There were some 70s comics that were non code like Dell or Gold Key. I like the Warren ones like Creey and Eerie they are black and white though.
Heavy Metal back issues are cheap I buy them at the local used book store as I collect Moebius art.
