Been collecting them since 1980, I love them! I lost a bunch in a move, still have about 10 or so. Cool read when tripping/stoned.

Never heard of it, but I'm guessing this is what the movie was based on?

I only checked out a couple of the magazines but the movie was cool. This is one I remember my cousin had, a takeoff on Gulliver's Travels:

They are very intense and thought provoking as well as fun and trippy. Lot of cool interviews with obscure people/bands/artists.

If you mean the original then yes, it was based on several short stories from the early issues which were animated and tied together to make a feature film.

The heavy metal 2000 movie is not from the comics though, I always wished they made an actual second one instead of that crap.

If you check my link in the OP the first few issues up from the 70's include some of the stories used in the movie. "Den" is my favorite.

That's cool, I liked the movie, I guess they're like a collectors item now. The only thing like that I collect these days are 70's horror comics, they're wicked.

I would have a lot more graphic novels but I sold all mine years bak and don't really have the money at the moment.

The original movie is a classic, the scene with the aliens doing space blow is one of my all time favorite animated scenes

What 70's comics were you into?

None in particular, just whatever I find that looks good at comic book fairs when I get chance to go to them, Tales from the Crypt are wicked.

I think the best are the rare ones I come across, like one story I remember called 'Nightmare World', it was about a mad scientist who discovered a potion to enter into his subconscious mind.

Check out the archive.org's heavy metal collection, they have complete 87 issues available for viewing online for free.

Sadly they are not all in order and a ton is missing but it spans the 70's through 90's

Visually many of them aren't that great, most of them were British and focused around occult themes. The American horror comics were more about Native Americans, voodoo and skeleton cowboys etc.

What separates them from the rest is that they were printed in the pre-comic code authority days, so many of them had negative endings, and were just generally twisted.

There was one cartoon about the beatles in a heavy metal I have or had. The story was Paul talking to a guy in an interview and he was saying "I'm the last one left..." that is becoming a reality!

Also to the horror comic collector check out some old uncle creepy and cousin eerie mags, I used to buy those as a kid, don't have any and haven't seen any in a long time. If I get around to it I'll get pics and post some of the rare ones I have. Also the old 80's metal mags are great. I think I have 2 of some kind.

There are some really strange comics in Heavy Metal, I remember one about some guy who comes back from oversees with the army to fin his girlfriend is living in some hip jazz musician's pad with a bunch of random people doing drugs and stuff. But since he loves her he moves in with them and tries to "fit in" so to speak, ends up taking a hit of L from his girlfriend and has a crazy time.

That's all I remember from it but it was a really bizarre story.

Some of them can get pretty dark though too

I would probably want to plan out some of the trippiest ones in advance to be safe.
