Light Wattage
    #23354341 - 06/17/16 10:44 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys. I've been shopping around for a good 6500 k CFL. I've picked out a few but I didn't find much info on wattage.  RR says bright and intense lighting is important.

I found one 40w = 200 incandescent w/ 2800 lumens, 65w/300 = 4100 lumens, and one 105w/4000 = 6000 lumens. My question what's the highest wattage bulb I can go with without causing too much heat??

Uh, for a CFL like.. a 13w bulb is fine.  That should be equivalent to a 60w incandescent.  Alternatively like a 21 watt cfl is equivalent to a 100w incandescent.  Either are bright enough.  Bulbs in the wattages you mention could perhaps be used to light multiple grows at once, but is a bit overkill for a single tub.  Beyond the 21w point heat starts to become a little bit of an issue.  You can dial in to use the convection to your benefit but it can also cause problems.

Thanks. I will continue to shop around and find a lower wattage bulb

I'm sure those could work, just make sure you have a fixture that's rated for the wattage of the bulb you're using.

I've noticed other people saying that 27 watt is a common bulb; I just want to avoid the heat

CFLs don't produce that much heat. That being said the 26 watts are a bit hotter than the 13s.
I like intense light pointed directly at my sub so I use the 26s.
I keep my tubs open so the heat isn't an issue.
In my bucket FC I use a 13W because it is a small confined space and the heat gets trapped.

One more question. For example let's say I'm comparing two 23 watt bulbs; one has a higher lumen amount and the other has a higher incandescent wattage equivalency. Is incandescent equivalency or lumen amount the more important factor to consider for the same wattage bulb?

You're over thinking this a bit, don't stress over the small details it will drive you nuts keeping you up at night, I remember how it was.  If all you can find is the higher wattage bulb just keep it further away. As long as it is somewhere close to the 6500k range you're good :super:

I use a 23-27w 6500k spiral CFL. The minimal little bit of extra warmth is makes if anything helps. An incandescent would be way to hot
