40cups WBS currently soaking, how long do YOU soak for?
    #23353837 - 06/17/16 07:16 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

this is definitely the most WBS ive done at one single time. had to grab a second crockpot to fill it all lol. also bought the wrong penningtons this time and it has way more floaters than before. but oh well.

anywho, i did the rinse and wash last night around 7pm, and started the soak. added gypsum of course and mixed it in.

now, im only asking because i believe i may be outdated at this point. but how long do YOU soak your grains before starting the quick simmer/steam drying?

i usually wait 24 hours, but sometimes that feels a bit too long and the grains seem over hydrated. im at 14 hours now. is it about time to get to work on simmering/steam drying and loading up jars?

and out of curiosity how many jars do you think this will fill? im gonna guess at least 24 jars eh?

and my ass plans to start another 40cup soak tonight! lol

edit - just so you know why im doing so many jars. most of my isolates from before are old and havent been kept properly, so i bought 4 new MS syringes online. dont like working with MS personally, but itll have to do for now. itll be g2g and agar after this pans out. but 12 jars of each strain is my goal. isolate the beasts of out each strain for prints and personal syringes and go to town from there with g2g and agar as well.

once g2g and agar get going, im truly PLANNING to run 20+ tubs at a time. i want this to be my most ambitious grow EVER. wish me luck..

edit 2 - 48 freshly drilled lids filled with poly and ready to go. WBS boil/simmered and steaming to dry (: toilet paper test later, jar em up and PC tonight. noc tomorrow and hope for the best. i think ill start a little grow log tomorrow just to keep progress on how this all pans out (; looking for 4-6 nice monos if im lucky!

Dayum!  Go big or go home.

Good luck on your project

Soak short and simmer,  or soak long and no simmer seems to be what works best for me.

As long as the stuff gets hydrated and cooked and not a starchy mess,  it's all good!

That excessive for a novice asking for soak times. ..

24 hours op but if you didn't know that I hope you follow everything else to the t... 40 jars is a lot to throw out.

lol i dont think i claimed to be a novice :p still ambitious maybe but this amount isnt anything new for me. what i plan to upgrade to however.. is new territory.

i was just seeing what others did. i keep being told a lot of my info is outdated so i was seeing just how much of what i know is wrong lol.

16-24 hours is a usual soak for me. my schedule doesnt always allow for exactly 24 hours but you know.. close on that one is fine enough.

P.S. 24 jars though is what im hoping for, not 40 yet! i usually run 20 cups at a time for ANY of my mono grows(2-3 tubs average). this time im pushing 40 from the start is all.

edit - actually with all the new shit ive learned just since signing up here, i suppose i AM a novice still. but whatever, my sterile technique has been on point for 10 years and thats all that matters to me. the rest is investment, patience, and ambition.

the soak i dont mind.. its the drying i dont like. to this day i dont have a perfected method for knowing exactly how dry it should be before i load jars. i just throw em around and stick my hand in it every half hour. if my hand comes out without too many seeds stuck, i figure im good to load em up lol. hasnt 'failed' me too badly yet :p i sometimes end up with overhydrated grains or somewhat dry grains, and sometimes even almost perfect grains, but slower colonization times dont bother me as long as it isnt contam'd...

Dude, every time I try WBS I regret. This year I was like OK OK, I'll give it another shot. Its the rinse that kills me. Theres just too much filthy shit  in there. I have some quart jars that are fully colonized now and hard as a rock cuz it sticks together. No good for G2G

Right now I'm using whole wheat. Its pretty much the same as Rye. I'd really like to try some oats. Do a no soak just simmer thang. Apparently you can boil the shit outta oaats and they don't burst.

Get a corn free brand and spend a couple extra dollars on a premium brand name rather then the cheap stuff....cheap wbs I sucks to prepare.... a pinch of gypsum per a cup will also stop the grains from clumping.

I have 11 jars of Burma (multispore) from wbs almost done colonizing  one is for a G2g once I build a new glove box... just saying ...

i find that the super cheap red/white bags of WBS sold at walmart are actually the best ones lol. no corn, no sunflower seeds, and everything else you need without any additives.. i couldnt find it this time around so i ended up with 2 40lb bags of classic penningtons. which by the way, has a TON of sunflower seed. no corn though luckily.

and gypsum definitely helps with clumping.

for anyone wondering, i ended up with 18 and 1/2 full master grain jars out of the 40 cups of WBS. im gonna soak ANOTHER 40 cups tonight for tomorrow. that makes 80 cups of WBS total. and around 40 total master jars. i am in fact over doing it this time lol. ill have 4 separate strains to work with. and once i G2G things are going to get stupid i have a feeling.

honestly it was so easy this time though. i have 2 sinks, which means 4 strainers total, so all 40 cups dry simultaneously. i have 3 20+qt PC's so i can fit just about ALL the jars at once without any issue whatsoever. i thought this was going to be difficult to upgrade the grow, but once you accumulate enough equipment its not all that bad :p

inoculating when i get home from work in about 4 hours. wish me luck  ill be noc'ing 9 jars each of 2 different strains tonight. and hopefully same process again 2 days from now with the remaining strains.

edit - oh and my grow log will start when i have time to compile pics and put everything together. this week though im sure. will G2G 2 master jars from each strain. the rest will be put into 4-6 66qt monotubs. (i think i might fuck around with one of the tubs and do a literal mix of all 4 strains haha. i LOVE seeing different mushrooms growing in one tub.)

as far as i know, the sunflower seeds are mostly hollow and not very conducive to mycelium growth. corn on the other hand, likes to explode with heat, and also releases a lot of starch which can get sticky and messy to deal with. can combat this with gypsum, but still not worth the mess imo.

"not very conducive"

Really. its almost perfect in fact. Sunflowers are AMAZING. In fact any seed grain or otherwise prepared is almost perfect.

Its a bunch of pretentious twits who have not but possibly a bit of a clue. rice cooker Same amount of water as ANY grain works every time.  Ready to load and will break up well enough.
