A cousin of mine is in her early 30s and has been probably 100-150lbs overweight for most of her adult life. She was never into physical activity and probably hasn't had an elevated heart rate in at least a decade and a half. If you drink enough soda and juice after a while it will take it's toll on you.
We all have our own vices, but you should really try to keep them under control because they will quickly catch up to you. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, smoking, or eating. They all have consequences, but to lose a foot at 30 is pretty unexpected and I doubt she is the type to turn her life around after this. It will be a short lived attempt at redemption followed by a rapid downward spiral. I have seen this cycle with other people, particularly with heart disease related to alcoholism and smoking and it is surprising how quick the body will break down.

sucks to hear. and you're right; if she's gotten to this point, it's unlikely she will make significant change in light of what's to come.
does this cause you to reflect on your health?
on a personal note, since you brought up drugs and heart, i've noticed in the last few months since ACTUALLY having to stop using marijuana (smoked) that my heart is not having the palpitations as it was over the last year or two. granted i live a high-stress life, by choice, and work a physically demanding job.
listen to your body. at this point in time, we only get one.
until the singularity

I've been spending the last 9 months aggressively working out and am in the best shape of my life, but I do notice those hangovers in your 30s are getting harder and harder on the body. I see the way my dad drinks in his 60s, but I don't think that is sustainable for good health over a lifetime. I would like to continue to actively work on reducing my alcohol consumption.

I work in a hospital and I can honestly tell you that 75%+ patients are there because of how they live their life. They simply do not take care of themselves. Smokers, hardcore drinkers, people shooting up opana, obese people. They keep living their same lives in a hospital bed or even after they get out of the hospital. They don't care. Never did. However, they do want people to help their "problems" out. "fix" them. It is interesting.
