What do you guys like about sports? I cant understand how people take them so seriously. Why should I care about who wins a football game? I can see that it is entertaining, but there are a lot of interesting things in the world.

I'm in the same boat as you, just the idea of sports makes me soul hurt, I cannot think of a more mindless repetitive thing to do. I know it's not right, but if someone tries to bring up sports in a conversation or is wearing sports clothing, I judge them harshly. What a waste of human life; gathering statistics, learning how the game works, rooting for a meaningless pointless win, crying if you lose. Holy fuck my stomach hurts just talking about hating sports.

Sitcoms are mostly terrible, the news is all bad, only a few good movies come out during a year. Hockey and basketball have 82 games each a season. It is something to pay attention to that isn't political, it isn't dramatic, it isn't personal. You can learn lots, but it is a type of entertainment that is consistent and regularly scheduled.
It is just something to pay attention to, because these athletes are the best in the world at putting a ball or a disc in a net.
You don't have to like it, but when your team gets on a roll it is fun. You get to cheer and celebrate because you have invested the time of watching them for the season.

If you are nihisitc enough you realize that all life is a waste of time, and you just kind have to fill it with activities that aren't terrible.

Fair enough.

I like sports because they are meaningless -- they have nothing to do with anything. The real world takes a back seat, and it's fairly interesting considering these athletes are the most pristine physical and mental specimens probably anywhere. There are psychological elements that are interesting. Rooting is fun. Betting on sports is a lot of fun -- makes it really interesting. Also, as Ahab noted, it's as good a way to fill a meaningless existence as any.
I respect that some people get absolutely nothing out of sports, but these same people should respect that some people do and it's okay.

Totally right, I'm guilty. It's a challenge for me.
