Question: Is there any advantage to using such a powerful heater (350W) for heating up about 5 gallons of water in the incubator? On the flip side, is there any possible disadvantage? Also, would this heater work well submersed in a PMP? Good find, they're pretty cheap on ebay...

I like the 350 cause it was about 10 bucks more then the 150. I put a pump next to the heater to stir the water so it doesn't just heat up from the bottom up.

Recently the heat went out in my house. This was poorly timed as i had inoculated a few dozen jars and some bags just about a week and a half earlier. I had substantial growth on the first few jars that i had inoculated, and the rest were showing signs of growth but just barely. Once the heat went out the temperature got down to about 55 degrees in the house for about four days. I was keeping my jars in a cardboard box. After that I saw no growth in the jars whatsoever, and i had pretty much accepted the fact that i had killed off all the mycos as a result of the ridiculous temperatures that they had been exposed to. Once the heat was fixed, i started storing my box of jars & bags in my upstairs bathroom, as that room gets around 78 degrees when i keep the door shut. After a couple days of this i started seeing new growth all around, so i built a 25 gallon tub-in-tub incubator with a 50 watt heater. I've been keeping my jars in that, a constant 80 degree environment, for several days now, and i am astounded at the amount of growth i have seen in that time. Most of the jars are 75-90%, and the bags are at around 60-75%. Highly rhizomorphic growth. I can't praise this system of heating enough.

Yeah, they do work good.
If your spores didn?t freeze they are ok.

Sure. Use the kind that go on the side of the tank. Remember that the jars closest to that jar are gonna be warmer then the jars furthest away from it.

hey magash, I just finally got my t.i.t. incubator and I was wondering if it was cool that the tub was floating in the water or if I neeed to weight it down so that it sinks a little. also what temp d u set your heater at. I know that the inside of the jars gets a little warmer than the inc so I was thinking like 83 deg or something around there. thanks man for your help. peace
ps heres a pic of my terrarium.

I have found that placeing my jars in a paperbag and placeing them ontop of the heater ducts in my basement is A1!
At my local pet store the owner pointed me in the direction of Glass tank and a Reptial heater pad... She said this was a tried and true method when useing perlite.
She said that the glass flask, fishtank heaters will bust for sure in shallow waters.
also mentiond that in the summertime, useing clear top bins is A1 for out doors.

Put it into a large jar and then place that into the incubator. I believe it's somewhere in the Faq, but I'm not sure.

I decided to get a heater like that-- the same model actually, with the remote because it's so cool. so I'll need a tub in tub model.
I don't have the heater yet, just ordered it. does it have a temp sensor that is separate from the heater? specifically, I want the sensor in the top tub near the jars, and the heater and pump in the lower tub. is this how you do it?

Also, if you dont care about the little LCD display, you can get the ProHeat I for like 25 bucks. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/worldpets/wonprictihe.html
On a side note, I found this, which is made by the same company.
