bulk sub help
    #23351046 - 06/16/16 01:09 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I have a monotub of golden halo that is going bad. I used 3 quarts rye berries and 7 quarts 50/50 manure verm. It was at 2/3rd colonized about 5 days ago. It appeared to have a stop of cobwed on a tiny section. I sprayed the uncolonized compost with 91% rubbing alcohol. There was no change to the substrate until I checked this morning. There's a bunch of pins forming. Its still 2/3rds colonized but now with pins. I said fuck it and put six 2 inch square holes at sub level filled with polyfil and misted like crazy. Anybody have any luck getting shrooms off contaminated bulks before? I'd like to get some but my hopes are low. But with pins already who knows. Just one starts a new grow right?

You misted your substrate with 91% alcohol??  First, 70% is better, secondly, alcohol is not what you wanna be spraying if you think you have cobweb.  Peroxide is the only thing that kills cobweb and it probably wasn't cobweb to begin with, since that only happens to people with really shitty fruiting chambers that choke off all the air.  There are no tips to fruiting a contaminated substrate really, other than don't.  Or if you do, do it outside.  Bacterial subs are mostly fine to fruit but any kind of mold should just be gotten rid of.

It's possible. The pinning in an uncolonized sub often means the mushrooms are trying to perform despite the contamination threat. In the future, if you have cobweb for real, you should use peroxide.

Give it plenty of air, I'd take the tub outside myself. That's really your best option at this point IME.

My chamber at the time had no air holes at all. BTW I pastuerized in jars on medium heat until the middle jar hit 140° then I timed an hour moved it off the burner and put the lid on but monitored temp while waiting an hour. It never got higher than 160°. I did wait 24hr before using my bulk manure.

Thanks for the info. About moving it outside? What should I do just dump it out or leave in tub?

I should also add that I layered my spawn manure not mixed it up and I also might have compacted it too much trying to make it even. How do you guys mix your spawn and subs together?

Evenly throughout with a top layer of just the bulk sub to conceal the grains.  I use coir so I just add a bit more, about 3/4 inch, and call it a pseudo-casing layer.  Layering spawn and sub is of no practical use though.

I love putting sketch monos outside. It's often the difference between getting nothing and fucking up future grows, and getting a few good fruits from it.

And you should edit posts, instead of posting over and over.

Its outside now. Anything special I need to do? I left it in the tub but took out the polyfil and cocked the lid sideways slightly. Should I mist every once in a while or leave it?

Just leave it. I'll often leave a bunch of the poly in too. I literally just take the tub outside.
