Am I the only one that gets reminded of that South Park episode. Now repeat after me, drugs are bad! Drugs are bad, M-kay.
Quote:
Now Brian counts routine as an important part of his life, and added to the publication: “I have my breakfast. I comb my hair. And I go to the park and I take walks. And then I come home and watch television. Like the news or Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.”
That right there sounds like a broken psyche, not a repaired one, to me.
I have read numerous times that psychedelics don't cause, but only trigger mental illness. From my experience I agree with that. I even wanted to be perma-fried in the middle of my best trip, but I couldn't make it possible. Until I see for myself that someone goes nuts from responsible use of psychedelics, I won't believe in it, though I am somewhat open for that option.
On the other hand, I believe trip induced trauma, depression, and mild cases of HPPD to be a real thing. Altering your consciousness too often, too strongly, will surely disorient you. I have that with weed binges too.

A lot of people in rehab always use Syb Barrett as a prime musician example of LSD induced psychosis.
However, if you do some research into good ol Syd, he was on a cocktail of fucking everything, and partying for days on end. He developed DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and most think he had up to 48 personalities going on in his life.
I read he went pretty much silent for the end of his career and life, from what I read on him, they don't even know how the guy truly died. Some say diabetes, some say cancer.
The media is a load of trash is all I'm really saying here.

"Brian Wilson wishes he had never experimented with drugs." "...revealing the secret to his happiness is “that I don’t use drugs and I play the piano.”" Drugs plural.
"Brian was treated for drug addiction and mental health issues..."
Since you don't really get addicted to psychedelics, this implies more that there was addiction and abuse of other substances.
Not that psychedelics can't stir up predisposed psychosis, but when it's coupled with -- like someone else suggested -- amphetamines, sleep deprivation, the several hour long temporary psychosis experienced in a trip is almost sure to be extended to become more permanent.

From Nick Mason's account, if I recall correctly, people basically would constantly feed Syd psychedelics, especially LSD, to see what kind of bizarre shit he could come up with because they considered him some kind of guru. Of course he was a very creative person already and a damn fine guitar player and singer to boot, but people wanted more and Syd seemed to enjoy the company...for a while. He was also using a lot of Mandrax to come down from the trip. The common theory seems to be that the prolonged cycle of acid and downers caused a glitch in his mind that led to his breakdown. It's tough to say, in retrospect, what the actual disorder was. Some say psychosis, some say schizophrenia, some say DID, some say MPD, others just say the acid simply fried him. What has been stated and restated, though, is that his band mates took him to a shrink of sorts to see what was wrong and the doctor simply said "There's nothing I can do. I've never seen this before."

I remember reading a biography about Syd and Floyd that said he would get really high on acid then start wigging out and would end up locked in a bathroom or pantry or some shit. I remember reading about his downer use too, I think a girlfriend of his was prescribed em or something and he ended up using them a ton. He probably was smoking a lot of cannabis too.

This line of discussion is difficult, for me, because I believe that many schizoids are giving an atheistic rationale for a religious experience.
If you need a materialistic explanation, here, I have nothing helpful to say.
