Brian Wilson: ‘The voices started after LSD’ 1

Brian Wilson wishes he had never experimented with drugs.
The 73-year-old musician, most famous for his pioneering work with the Beach Boys, spent much of his younger life as a recluse after developing schizophrenia in the 1960s. The condition means he hears voices, but it only began after he started taking LSD, also known as acid.
“LSD made me more creative,” he admitted to Esquire magazine. “It helped me write (Beach Boys’ iconic 1966 album) Pet Sounds. But the voices started after LSD, too.”
These voices still haunt Brian, but not all the time. However he admits he often struggles with the things they say to him.
“They say different things,” he added. “Like ‘we’re going to hurt you’. It’s crazy! But not all the time, yeah. Like every other day.”
Brian was treated for drug addiction and mental health issues by Dr Eugene Landy in the 1970s and ’80s in a desperate bid to put a stop to his reclusive existence.
Dr Landy eventually helped Brian to start functioning again, but he later lost his professional license and was banned from treating the musician following accusations he had brainwashed the star with his extreme method of therapy which involved round-the-clock supervision and total isolation from family and friends.
Now Brian counts routine as an important part of his life, and added to the publication: “I have my breakfast. I comb my hair. And I go to the park and I take walks. And then I come home and watch television. Like the news or Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.”
He also plays the piano to stay content, revealing the secret to his happiness is “that I don’t use drugs and I play the piano.”
The tale of Landy’s therapy sessions with Brian were told in last year’s movie Love & Mercy, with Paul Giamatti playing the psychologist. Brian previously said that he was blown away by the actor’s realistic portrayal of Landy.

I think this is a no brainer case! The guy was genetically predisposed to Schizophrenia. I haven't heard voices even after numerous trips and I think many others can agree with that. Any problems I have are not contributed to psychedelics.

I used to hear the chanting bikini voices on mushrooms but only my first eight or nine trips had the chanting and music. I never heard the voices when I wasn't tripping.

Speaking of bikinis, I think these woman walking around in swimsuits is more of an issue. It is like legal underwear. What is the difference?

.Now that I think about it if he was using some sort of drug for stability the LSD would loosen the lithium in his brain and he could have a stroke..

Or he was just one disposed to mental illness and shouldn't of been doing drugs....

If people didn't use LSD so indiscriminately in the 60s Bill probably would have been fine. However we had to learn from our mistakes and everything happens for a reason.

It's not that people who are predisposed to mental illness shouldn't use psychedelics, they can use psychedelics and be just fine most of the time if they don't abuse it. With psychedelics it all depends on how you use it. Psychedelics can either make you sane or insane.

That is definitely something to consider, could've been using stimulants as well (speed was also quite popular in the 60's I believe)

I heard audible voices after being awake 9 days straight on meth, and I have heard audible voices on high doses of shrooms, happens when I take 4 to 7 grams. Now I only take a humble 1.5 grams to trip,,, perfect dose for the love.

ive dealt with all kinds of mental illness..but i will trip till the day i die..especially da fungus!! the way i see mental illness now is that it is just hypersensitivity and an expanded view of reality..sometimes too expanded to fit into society...but mental illness used to be called shamanism and considered a gift

Nothing is harmless.
There are lots of cases of people who were totally fine and went nuts after LSD. Like they were fine, took LSD, and weren't fine. It was clearly the LSD that did it. I doubt they were all predisposed to mental illness, I find that hard to believe. What about the flip side, would have they have stayed fine if they never did it? The guy who the CIA dosed who later jumped out a window was 40, that's pretty late for schizophrenia to set in. I am gussing if he was never dosed he would have been fine. Some people just go nuts on the shit. Maybe it's only 1 in a 100 or 1 in 500, but it happens. But this place is big on denial on this issue, even though there are lots of crazy people here. I am convinced I won't go crazy but I don't have that same faith in anyone who hasn't done it lots of times.
