Aging Conifer or Pine Sawdust
    #23348996 - 06/15/16 09:53 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW DOES AGING PINE CONIFER SAWDUST WORK? Please... anyone? I need your help!!!

I am about to start a small but significant gourmet operation and hardwood sawdust is limited, so I'd like to know if aging pine sawdust in the sun inside a VERY warm greenhouse with a LOT of sun, for say, 6 months would be enough to render it useful for mushroom cultivation.

I think I've read almost every post on aging sawdust in this forum but the explanation of how it is properly done is not convincing to me. I have read RR's entries, but he gives very few details saying he spreads it on the field, so I'd guess it gets wet when it rains and I am not sure if it kind of ferments at some point, or if it is only the light and heat of the sun that do the magic and dry it out making the terpenes/phenols/and other volatiles evaporate. If it is this way, I'd think it really doesn't need to get wet, and it might be capable of being aged somewhat quicker in a hot dry greenhouse. What are your comments people? Does anyone know the mechanics, maybe a link or article?

I would appreciate your help tremendously guys!!! please please please please, I can pay, or I can trade some genetics for this valuable info

Volitiles are large chain organic molecules.  Perhaps test some samples in petri dishes that you have processed different ways.

Pine is high pH so you have to factor that in as well for optimal substrate prep.

My first instinct would be cold pasteurization via saturated aqueous solution of hydrated lime.  (calcium hydroxide)

FYI, the solubility curve is inverse to temp.  Cooler water dissolves more. pH will scale off that

Oh, and you can likely look up the exact oils present in Pine wood and find some reaction formulae with OH-

I'm sure heat, UV and the usual stuff degrades it quickly.  Some microbes might help too.  But typically conifers are highly fungicidal
