Green fungus on Shiitake logs
    #23348770 - 06/15/16 08:52 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hello, I'm new to the forum. My brother-in-law and I started a small mushroom farm this spring. We inoculated our logs with sawdust spawn about 8 weeks ago. Some ends of the logs look good with white mycelium growth, while others have this green at the inoculation sites. I'll gladly add pictures if someone can tell me how. Thanks!

It's hard to tell if that's Trichoderma mold or a species of Lichen.
Either way, since these are outdoors just let them do their thing, as long as the fruits are clean all is well.

Thank you for the reply. I'll keep an eye on them. I have noticed some green on the ends of some of the logs as well. The green appears like it's coming through from the inside, like the white on the healthy logs?

Anytime you have moist exposed wood there will be mold. But most molds tend to colonize outer areas of a substrate since they cannot make a mushroom, they need their surface exposed to open-air for the spores to take flight. However, shitake, being the mushroom it is, can colonize deep and project fat fruits into the sky to spread it's spores. So it has a clear advantage on logs.

Pickin' up what I'm layin' down?
