My aloe is breeding with itself :D
    #23347586 - 06/15/16 02:30 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

So last spring i bought myself a small aloe vera, i put into a large pot in the hope it would grow big. Anyway this spring I saw another very small one growing in the pot, so I mentioned it to a user i natter with here and they informed me yeah they can self propagate, anyway low and behold a second started growing.

So Ive been watching curiously and I shit you not, there are now this spring four small ones in the pot with the original big one! haha amazing! :dancer:

So now i got too many of them

I apologise for the poor light, i lit the babies with a torch, i wouldve waited til tomorrow but not like im picturing a specimen is it lol

The plant is getting big now ^_^

So my question, whats the best way to remove them without damaging them or the big aloe? I will wait til theyre a little bigger as two just started to pop up this week

Yeah they send out little rhizomes. Digging them out while trying to damage the roots as little as possible would be the best way to go about re-potting them imo

Get as close to the base as tou can and use a box cutter.

Funny you should post. I just removed an aloe pup from the base of my dads plant. Good stuff and a very versatile plant.

They clump alot so you could just let it be and get it later when its bigger.

Here they become invasive quick. Some ive had clump and get unmanagable and others get quite large and never pup.

Go for the big one girl. They are way better and i believe yours is small and pupping it will be so hard to contain.

These produce masses of offsets.  The last time I trimmed mine back, I first had to smash the pot !!

If you get too carried away with the ease of propegating aloe they'll eventually push you off your land.

Not to be a nazi, but there is no breeding going on.  This is asexual propagation at work.  Nice plant tho, really like how you jumped in head first to cacti/succulents.

Well yes, rhizomes and offsets are part of vegetative growth.  No flowers or fruit in evidence here.
