ID Request Auckland New Zealand
    #23347560 - 06/15/16 02:20 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hi guys,

I have been a hunter for a few years now and have mainly stuck to cubes and subs as I am quite comfortable with these. Yesterday we went for a hunt and came across these little guys. If anyone could help ID them I would really appreciate it. I have some photos and descriptions of what they look like.

Habitat:
These were found in a park in the Auckland area. They were growing in wood chips next to some flax bushes and some low creeping vines. They were mainly under the wood chips with just the tip of the caps rising above the wood chips. The more we dug around the more we found in this colony.

Gills:
Gills are all brownish colour with the cap on many bowing inwards around the gills. No spore print sorry.

Stem:
The stems are very short and many are absent after picking. The ones that still have the stems are white in colour and quite firm. They are also hollow after having been trimmed.

Cap:
The caps range from pale white to goldish brown. They all have a bluish dark tinge that circumvents the base of the cap. Caps are very firm and feel quite slick in texture.

Bruising:
They all have bruising of a nice blue colour. The stems have bruised and the caps have a bluish tinge surrounding the base as mentioned.

I appreciate any help in IDing these little guys. I would really like to know the species as I have yet to come across these in my hunts.

Love and peace,
Trippy The Tree

Those are Psilocybe weraroa var subsecotioides, aka Psilocybe subsecotioides. The latter name seems more common, while the former might be a bit more conservative scientifically. Nice haul.

When you say you and your mates are used to sticking with cubes, do you mean overseas (or cultivated?) P. cubensis doesn't occur in the wild in NZ (afaik)

While looking at these, I'm more inclined to appreciate the difference from P. weraroa.

Perhaps you should spread them out a bit, so they don't go rotting on you.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am very pleased that these are actives. How common are these? Just having a quick read around they seem to be more uncommon than most. I know cubes as I am from the States originally.NZ has been far too good to me to consider going back though

They have now been split between two plates and have been fan drying overnight with the rest of yesterdays haul. It turned out to be a magical day indeed. I will say though, what you see here is only about half of what was there. Now that I know what these are we will have to go back and get the rest. We picked for a good half an hour in this undiscovered patch.

Another photo for you guys :mushroom2:
