Its like a condom, you may not use it but you'll be sure glad you take it everywhere when/if the time were to come.
I took a long safety course to get my concealed permit and i'll tell you it was the best class I've ever taken. I learned A LOT. Most importantly, I learned my rights as a gun owner and the laws that I need to follow.
The class also went over different scenarios about when you might need to gun and as to whether or not that scenario granted lethal force. ( such as being mugged, like OP mentioned ).
Youre that scared, really?? I see it as fear and the hope that youll be a hero one day. When you could end up being the opposite.
Anyway its disturbing how many of you are so ready to kill. You probably shouldnt have a gun.
I just find it sad that people live in fear like Herbologist. its not statistically insignificant that the most irrational people with terrible risk assessment skills are the most likely to be walking around armed.

we've all seen bowling for columbine, or most of us i'm sure. one of the main points of that movie i think is that the rest of the worlds populace has just as many guns as we do, but far less fatalities. they don't shoot each other like americans do. why is the question

Not many people get shot up with machine guns in the US anymore. Back in the 30s, that was the criminals weapon of choice. What happened? Machine guns were subject to strong gun control legislation, requiring registration, fees, intensive background checks and eventually an outright ban on manufacture and sales. So... Enough with the bullshit that gun control doesn't work.

i never said it wasn't somewhat effective, but gun control tackles a symptom, not the cause of the problem, and takes away one of the most important human rights (the right to effective self defense). that's a backwards way of doing things. we need to create a society in which the socioeconomics are such that organized crime isn't necessary or profitable (legalizing drugs would be a good start, also providing a living wage to every person as a matter of course), also we need to find effective methods of treating mental health problems (i.e not just pumping people full of drugs designed to mask the symptoms of deeper psychological issies)

I think a major problem is that there is this mentality that private ownership of guns is even necessary. So much reliance on a tool is unhealthy. guns aren't what makes us a free society, and frankly they are somewhat responsible for etching away at our freedoms - hyper vigilant and paranoid police are a good example. Look at poor Herbologist. Afraid to leave his house without a gun (yet thinks I'm chicken shit lol) That's no way to live. Free yourselves from this burden.

technically guns are exactly what made America a free society, you'd still be a British colony if not for guns.

I know how hard it is for you to hear opinions contrary to your own. You like to shut down speech you don't agree with. Sorry you find my opinions politIcally incorrect, but deal with it. Seriously, listen to yourself complaining I'm derailing a thread about guns with a post about guns.

It's only a matter of time before you start flaming, you always do with people who don't share your political views.
OP wanted real advise on weapons, which we were doing. Now you're here, and it stinks to high heaven with your garbage.
You have no advise for OP, absolutely none. So why help derail?

You think the US would still be a British colony now? Considering the fates of other British colonies, I don't think so. Britain lost control of every major colony decades or Centuries ago. They got to keep a few specks on the map.

not having guns doesn't make us any more free. yes they are bad and do scary things, but the world is scary and i don't want to be at a disadvantage on the premise that everyone should be nice. obviously they should. can you fight an aligator? me neither. if you crossed paths with one, would you just accept it as your time to go? kind of a silly question but just curious.

No, you have totally misrepresented the OPs question. He wasn't asking for advice on weapons, he was asking "why have a gun" it's right there in the title.
Quote:
Is it a psychological thing? That having guns makes people FEEL safer?
I'll answer him again. Yes, it's a psychological thing. They make you FEEL safer. they don't actually make you safer. They put you at greater risk of an earlier death. Statistically, gun owners do not live as long as non gun owners. Unless you have a true, legitimate need to own a firearm, you shouldn't have one. worrying about mass shootings or home invasions is not rational because you or your loved ones are far more likely to be harmed by your own gun then need it for self defense.
