First time I have heard/read reports of this kind. Wondering a bit how accurate their id's may have been.

Never been too keen on Leccinum scabrum myself though, I consider it a generally poor edible.

reviewing the NAMA yearly toxicology reports for the last several available years, it looks like between 0-3 incidences per year are recorded for Leccinum sp.  GI upset is the most commonly reported issue.  it appears as though this is one that doesn't affect all people who eat them and there was no mention of Leccinum scabrum specifically that i saw. 

but like Anglerfish says, there are questions about accuracy in ID even though the NAMA system for identifying troublesome species has seemingly improved.
