Is it worth the debt to go to school in America?

I see students drowning in debt and wonder if that path is even worth it.. Maybe schooling in another country would be way better?
Someone was telling me Europe has a good affordable public schooling!

Depends on the debt and the school.
I don't really think anybody is drowning in debt. There is already a bailout for student loan debt, its called income based repayment. You only have to pay back a portion relative to what you make. If you make very little, you pay none. If you make a lot, you pay it all. Most of us are inbetween. After 20 or 25 years, it gets forgiven.
My degree was a money loser. I am on income based repayment and I pay less than the interest alone. If I lose my job, Ill pay even less. If I get a raise, I will pay more. After a few decades it gets forgiven and I only owe taxes on it.
Most of the time you hear crazy debt amounts its from spoiled rich kids who use student loans to subsidize a lifestyle. You should be able to get a degree for less than 40k.

If you are sensible in what the income potential is from the loan/degree, definitely worth it. If you get loans to pay for some real speculative degree like english and you are hoping to be the next Stephen King, well, it's probably not going to end well. With the absurdly high interest rates, I really disagree with diecommie's laissez faire attitude towards the forgiveness. Your loan can get way out of control in that 25 years and having to pay back a massive payment to the IRS in one payment is not going to be fun. I personally plan to pay mine off over the next 5-6 years. I hate having that monkey on my back.

I think its worth it IF you have a career in mind that can easily pay back the money, like engineering, business, medical field, electronics, maybe mathmatics even teaching.
Most of the liberal Arts are useless unless u get a Masters and work at a University.
Research a ton about the field you wanna persue before even looking at colleges. U may need more schooling than u think, and it can really expensive for College.

As others have said, it depends on your career goals, and ambition.
For the vast majority of people I know, it was a definite win to go to college.
There is also an intangible component of the college experience.
-------------------- ...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge. It is an indellible experience; it is forever known. I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did. Smith, P. Bull. Menninger Clinic (1959) 23:20-27; p. 27. ...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely. Osmond, H. Annals, NY Acad Science (1957) 66:418-434; p.436

Yes, the college experience is unlike anything else.
I loved it. The learning, the classroom environment, all the cool people and events, the vibez of college are unmatched.

Honestly?! Unless you're trying to fit into the mainstream you should just do it yourself. Everything you can learn in college you can find on the internet. You're not accredited though so you'll have to be other worldly to succeed on your own.
Studying for 16 hours a day and starting your own business isn't easy though...

You pay for degrees in medicine, engineering, architecture, law, chemistry, etc.
Degrees such as arts, philosophy, religion, etc, shouldn't really paid for. Just go to class without being registered if you want. You'll get the knowledge minus the price but you won't be able to do the exams therefore you won't get the piece of paper. In the end it's the knowledge that counts. Paying for the degree is a waste of money.

It really depends on the major and if theres a good chance of getting a well paid job after. All i can suggest is dont get a film degree.

You can learn that stuff on your own. Or at least try to learn the basics on your own and see if you actually like doing it and if you are good at it. While you're doing that you could take some math and science classes to get those out of the way.

Id say go for it!
Research colleges that specialize in those high tech fields for best possible education.
I would also recommend maybe living in the state for awhile, that way you get in state tuition which is WAY cheaper than out of state tutution.

You make more money with a degree. Now I make almost double what I made without a degree and I do the same thing.

Theres a 9 month course that can make me 42k a year working with computers but it isnt the most interesting subject, but only will end up putting me 10k in debt. But i'm already working on a credit card debt with 10k left.
Might be a good idea to do that and work in that field for 2 years, make around 80k and then take my next step..

Even tho it's the most interesting subject it will synergize well with the other technical fields I want to excel in.

I went to engineering school. If I could go back, and I still might, I would probably become the guy that runs the CAT scan or MRI machines. That seems like such an easy gig and it pays really well. You just tell your patient to lay in the tube and sit still. You turn it on and wait 30 minutes or an hour.

Sounds like the best thing for you is to apply for financial aid (FAFSA) and go to a community college. It is likely you can get aid you don't have to pay back for some or all of your community college tuition. Then when you get two years of credits you will have a better understanding of what kind of loans you may have to take out to get what you want from a university.

I am working very slowly through a computer science degree and it's starting to feel like - what's the point of actually doing the degree when I could just work through the material on my own and not worry about what mark I'm getting in the course and so on. All the courses I've taken for it so far have seemed worthwhile and useful for the most part and the required courses are a good road map of useful topics to know about, but the marks aspect gets me stressed out.
I was taking some courses this summer but I dropped them. Over the past couple weeks I've been doing a bit of work continuing something that developed out of an embedded systems course I took in the fall. Something to be able to show potential employers eventually. I'm not quite at the point where I feel comfortable trying to get software jobs but I probably will want to before I finish the degree (if I ever finish it).
