If we're lucky enough to make it that far, that is.
How do y'all feel about that? Like I'll see an old dude or woman struggling to even walk, or get out of his/her car, and I think to myself, that will be me one day if I make it to that point.
Or take Muhammad Ali for example. In his youth and prime he was known as the most bad ass dude on the planet, but in his older years, through age and disease (Parkinsons), he couldn't even walk or talk anymore.
I used to never think about shit like this when I was a kid but now time flies by so fast it's scary.
How do you guys & gals feel about someday growing into old age and being one of those people that young motherfuckers (like us) feel sorry for?

It scares the shit out of me for some reason, my body breaking down and not being able to do things I love anymore, my mind starting to slowly slip, it's something I think about a lot, I don't want to die young but I don't want to grow that old, we all have to die at some point and I honestly hope that I die by heartattack or something else that's quick and not prolonged agony before it starts going downhill, some people stay with it up into their 80's or further, others start deteriorating at 50, there's no real way to know when but hopefully it happens before it goes downward for me

About a month ago, this lady and I were small talking at work, and she said something along the lines of:
"Seems like yesterday I was 27 and just meeting my husband and starting my career, and had everything ahead of me. That was 20 years ago. I don't even know where the time went. Felt like I blinked and here I am at 47."
Not that 47 is old by any means, but dude, the way she said it really struck a chord. It scared me, man.

My grandmother has moderately bad dementia and I would rather be dead than go down the route she's going.
Luckily they think that it was actually caused by heart medication and genetically I don't think I'm at risk. It doesn't help that she pretty much let herself get railroaded by old age, once she stopped being active and stopped reading or doing things like crossword puzzles, it seemed like she got much much worse. It honestly seemed like she kinda just gave up and was just okay with being miserable, and I refuse to go down that same path. This is a women who got in one car wreck and refused to keep driving, literally hasn't driven since 1960 and still thinks she has better judgement as a passenger in your car, became a widow in the early 70's and never again even thought about meeting someone new because she was resigned to being a 'widow' - very very old fashioned. My paternal grandmother is pretty much the opposite and though she's a bit younger(late 70's) she's going strong.
I'm not really afraid of getting old I'm just afraid of living a wasted life.

The awareness of how inevitable and rapid aging and death are is a big part of why I really try to work out, meditate, hug my wife and do yoga daily.
Getting old is unavoidable but feeling like you wasted your life is not.
In order to avoid feeling like you wasted your life figure out now what is most important to you and try to do it every day.
The worst part of aging is loss of health so taking care of your health through diet and exercise is of ultimate important .
You only have a healthy young body briefly so using it to the fullest is important to me- working out not just to slow aging but to enjoy youth.
When I get old I will spend more and more time in deeper and deeper meditation.
Old Buddhist monks seem so much happier and brighter then old people in western culture - things like yoga and tai chi really help people stay young inside and out.
Traveling the world when young is another thing I believe will make growing old less bitter.
And of course not smoking so that old age can at least potentially be enjoyable and not misery.
I am so grateful I met my wife at 19 years old- i never feel like time is wasting because I spend every day with the person I love .
Tell the people you love that you love them every single day.
The main way I take the edge off aging is gratitude - instead of being sad you are one year older, be grateful you got to live one more happy year.
Whatever you will really wish you had done don't wait because by the time you are 40 it's pretty much too late to decide you really want to be a body builder or an athlete or whatever - you need to get started on those goals as early as possible because they take time and you need to get going on them when you are young and strong .
Aging takes everything you love away from you, and therefore attachment will break you unless you learn to liberate yourself from it - again, meditation.
The Buddha was a spoiled young prince when he first saw an aging man, a sick man and a corpse .
This experience was the catalyst that led him to attain enlightenment .
My plan is to emulate his response to these grim realities.

I don't worry about it, c'est la vie ya dig. I just hope that when I get really old I don't like lose my bowels here and there, and mope around and smell like piss, no offense to any older gents here, just how I feel. I got a couple years until I hit that midlife point, so still have ample time to work some shit out.
If I ever get married then I shouldn't have that much to worry about, you know because the married man dies like a king, and the single man dies like a dog, heard that some place and agree.
I definitely don't feel like my age though, in fact I think I have only gotten better in these last few years.
I only hope to be as cool as this guy though.

I hear you man. Am hitting 35 this year, which to me is not old. I feel as limber as a spring twig...well maybe summer twig.
I have two older brothers who I am very close with, and it is weird thinking that they are on their way to 50! WAHHHH. No turn back the time hehe. But its all good.

I don't like getting old until I'm 70 and older. Once your 70 and still mentally and physically intact - you're really a badass for surviving that long. And every year you go further is just bonus baddassery. Every decade after that is epic.
I plan on living to at least 100. The birthday cake with 100 candles is an epic achievement.

I honestly can't wait to be an eccentric old lady. I'm gonna go all out. Wear pajamas and talk really loud to myself. But be a nice old lady bc I'm a nice person already. Be around my hopefully growing family. Keep going with whatever I dream of. I hope I live long enough...
The thing that scares me is I'm not living enough now. I've never been scared of death. Just being taken too soon before I finish all I want to.

No reason why you can't do that already! I mean...I guess you have to reach a certain age before it's okay to truly give no fucks and have people accept it tho.
I have a friend that's a 24 year old little old lady, and she dresses like it, but she pulls it off well.
she also does not come over to my house(or any of our mutual friends) without a bag of groceries with which she insists on cooking at some point. It's great because we always smoke together, but she is a total kitchen nazi, I'm scared to cook infront of her because she'll tell me I'm doing something wrong and shoo me away. She was raised by her grandparents who are literally mr. and mrs. claus, and I sell stuff at craft shows with her a lot and goddamn she's a hustler.

she also got me this scarf and a million other old lady things from the thrift store.

One other major thing for me - I have never taken opiates at all in my life and I never will until I get old . I'm saving that class of drugs to be a silver lining for my old age .
Once I'm like 80-90 I won't care about ruining my life with an addiction and I'll enjoy me some opium and morphine .
It will be great. I'll be sitting there with my cat nodding out chiefing on a cannabis oil vape all day long.

I've had thoughts about how I would deal with old age but as time goes by I can't think of a better way to live than getting old. I want to be old enough that I no longer look at my life in terms of then and where I'm going.. I want to be old enough that I can look back on my life knowing it's full potential and accomplishments, joy, sadness.. Life is a trip, and I intend to ride it out for better or worse.

our perception of time changes as we age so in a sense it does speed up the older we get. things aren't novel anymore, you make less new discoveries, you've "been there done that" already. a remedy to this would be to try new things, pick up new hobbies, or whatever, i really don't know. i do know that my 20s went a lot faster than my teens (which seemed to dragggggg) and i'm sure my 30s will seem to go quicker than my 20s.
as far as the question in the original post, i'm cool with getting older. i'm actually looking forward to my 30s which i'm trying very hard to see as a new chapter of my life; i think they are going to be great (i hope they'll be great anyway). right now though, i'm just procrastinating like a motherfucker on getting this damn essay for history done which i got an extension on.

Youre really smart Acidic Sloth. That analysis of our perception of time is spot on. Everything does get mundane and repitive as we age, so it feels like time is going by so fast.
I keep telling my GF "Babe, it feels like time is accelerating" but really its just my perception.
But a part of me wants to believe the accelerating expansion of the Universe is somehow accelerating time as well.

"you're only as old as you feel"
Cliche but true. I find that I change ages all the time depending on how I feel All you can do is live your life and try not to waste it... Moonshoe hit the nails on their heads in that post above:
"Tell the people you love that you love them every single day.
The main way I take the edge off aging is gratitude - instead of being sad you are one year older, be grateful you got to live one more happy year."
Sometimes I get anxious thinking about all the horrible health problems older people in my family have suffered, but then I realize some of that is preventable by living a healthier lifestyle than they did. Knowing that makes me feel a little better, like I can (to a point) control how I age.
I also kind of look forward to the day when I get a senior discount at the thrift store.

I forgot about senior discount!!!
One time my grandma went to the thrift store with her friend and started shopping around. About 5 min later she starts noticing a burning smell and notices there's no one else in the store shopping. Her friend points out the smoke and they are confronted with a fireman who asks what they're doing in the store.
Apparently it was on fire and they walked right past the other people outside, along with the fire truck and firemen.... to go shopping.
I hope I'm a bit more aware than that when I'm older but I laughed still.

Hahaha
I was at the movies one day and it was fucking packed like a can of sardines with old people. They were farting, blowing their nose..etc. It was fucking gross. This old couple came in a little late and the movie had started so it was dark. They walked down the row in front of me looking for a seat and crashed into the movie theatre wall. Then..they backed up and walked into it several more times..idk wtf they were thinking but it was funny

Oh by the way as I age (I am only 29 but I feel myself getting old already) that the absolute BEST things for it are full body deep tissue massage and flotation tanks.
As I age I am going to get more and more massages and do more and more floats and spend more and more time in spas.

i don't mind the idea of growing old so long as i maintain what i feel is an acceptable level of quality of life. the moment i no longer feel able to do the things i enjoy,
fuck wasting away, unhappy and/or in pain
as well, i will not have children, and only a brother/niece remaining as family members.

I'm not really scared of aging. What really scares me is the idea of losing people close to me suddenly and unexpectedly. When someone gets old death seems natural and allows them to escape suffering, but knowing that anyone could expire at any time is hard.

Well some things about getting old suck and some things don't, I'll list a few;
Things that suck: - you begin to look older and the girls no longer look at you - little old ladies start giving you the eye - somewhere along the line you gave up jumping over things - you can't be bothered to carry a comb any more - you don't recognize your reflection any more - you fart more - you know death approaches
Things that don't suck: - people think you know more than you do - anxiety tends to decrease, things that were sooo important to you once are no longer a big deal - you don't really age inside your head - you don't feel the necessity to hide from those around you by playing with your media device in public - you no longer worry about your future place in this world - sex is no longer a driving force (though getting some is still good) - when you fuck up you can always blame it on age, everyone understands - you can actually afford all those sins you wished you could when younger
Reading all your posts about aging is like a walk through memory lane, remembering how it was when I thought similar thoughts at your age. Yes it catches up to you before you know it.
How best to approach it? Depends on you. Lots of good ideas in the posts here but I'd sum it up by saying brain then body. Keep you brain alert and interested and your attitude up beat. Keep your body healthy, at least healthy enough to be able to enjoy your old age. Beyond that just enjoy it because you sure can't change it.

I was high thinking about music and life around a 100 years ago.
I did some mental time traveling and came vividly to terms with how short time is, that the last 100 years just flew by in the blink of an eye.
And that my time is only a quarter of that blink.
The show goes on until your curtains are drawn,
This is the word of your lord.

People should donate to SENS research to help fight ageing! There are some scientists who think it can be potentially cured within a few-several decades.
