Reishi Monotub Experiment

Hello all,
Recently I began cultivating Reishi and have been doing lots of trial and error to see what best suits my culture. Recently a couple bags of hardwood substrate slightly melted open in the PC. When I realized this, I quickly placed them in clean garbage bags and then once cooled, I inoculated the substrate with Reishi WBS spawn in a 66qt tub. I assumed as I was putting this together that it would be a lost cause, seeing as sterility was compromised... anyways, 5 days later it looks fully colonized! I am very excited to see what happens with this project, as I only have experience growing them from bags. I will update this thread as it progresses!

Due to how aggressive Reishi is, and bulking to wood, it is incredibly forgiving.
1 week seems to be average for full colonization, as long as it's well mixed.
Had a rock solid pint I bulked without chopping up, and the thing is still not 100% at 3 weeks ><
Good luck with the antlers!

There are no holes cut in, the tub is opened and fanned 3x day. It resides in a mylar tent with air filter.

Wait, so you can sterilize supplemented sawdust and then spawn into a monotub? How does that work without contaminating your sub?

My plan was to go from grain to mycobag of sawdust & alfalfa (sterilized) then just sawdust in mono (bucket tek)
Results have been good so far. Very certain I have plenty of nutrients. Working on a journal entry for substrate richness & supplements.

This batch was unsupplemented. I pressure cooked my bags at 15psi for 1.5 hours. The reishi myc is very aggressive and colonized everything very quickly. I expect antlers over conks from this experiment.

Just out of curiosity, what percent alfalfa are you using..?

25% at first bulk out worked well for blocks
Did 50% for a few, but that seemed far too rich. 6:1 hickory in monotub, so 1/12th final mix

Why sterilize them if it's not supplemented? You could just pasteurize and save a ton of time

Fuel pellets work fine with bucket tek. Super fast prep.

I sterilized them because I have had trouble with getting pasteurization correct. I have had decent success with sterilizing substrate. For cubes the bucket tek works fine, I have yet to try it with hardwood substrate (that would be nice and easy if it indeed works!) I suppose because I'm new at this I wanted to make sure the substrate was sterile and am not comfortable with pasteurization yet.

Thank you for your sharing your log, Snazz!
Micelio thank you as well for your link! Good info on hardwood substrate there.
Here are a few pics of the tubs this morning!

^^ looks like it's enjoying itself in there!
