Which one of you guys are broke?

And by broke, I mean a 20$ essential item breaks and you can't afford to get a new one so you have to live without it for a while.
How do you manage to live? How do you entertain yourself? What sacrifices do you have to make in order to stay afloat?

There was a picture someone shared on Facebook the other day that said something like "If you don't have any money in the bank but your bills are paid and you have food in the fridge, you're not broke, you're responsible." and I guess that would apply to us. We're currently struggling to make it and basically have no money in the bank the few days before payday but bills are paid and we eat. We don't spend a whole lot on unnecessary things but we could probably have a bit more in the bank if we really buckled down and only bought the absolute necessities. Internet is really the only form of entertainment we have so in a way I value it as a necessity but it's really not.

I stay afloat by doing side jobs for under the table wages, and selling off part of my knife collection
Mostly my entertainment is cheap; golfing, playing with my dog, mountain biking, lifting weights
I sacrifice by not going on vacation, not buying new toys, and buying only cheap supplements, I even slowed down from driving 85mph all the time to only 80mph, to save fuel

That's great and all, but leaves a lot to the unknown. That's simply not possible for the majority of people for one reason or another.

can you name an essential item that only costs 20$, because i can't think of one, but sometimes i go into stores and can't leave with everything i intended to buy due to lack of funds
i'm considered well below the poverty line, having never earned over ten grand annually--but, i also don't pay rent and get a large percentage of my food from the trash, so i rarely feel difficulty in covering my basic needs
how do i live?--out of a backpack, wandering wherever the wind or desire takes me
how do i entertain myself?--i read books, write poetry and philosophy, play the blues harp, go on adventures with my dog, sit in a spot with a good view and think, cook and eat great meals with friends, teach myself new skills (currently, tattooing and juggling), and sometimes i post on in the pub
what sacrifices have i made?--the biggest, already mentioned, is my decision to not live in a house in order to avoid losing 1/3 to 1/2 of my income to rent; i rarely have the money to afford brand new items, generally sticking to secondhand; luxury goods and expensive habits are completely out of range--yet, i have zero debt, manage to take care of my dog, and i also manage to save up to buy high ticket items i want/need, like a quality sleeping bag or tablet device, and even laser eye surgery (by the end of this summer)--i feel that my lifestyle has opened up the opportunity for more enjoyment rather than less, so i'm not sure i would even consider myself to have sacrificed--rather, i traded up

THat's what I'm talking about.
One day I'll give this way a living a shot. I've always wanted to go like 2 weeks with 20$ in my pocket and just go with it.

The average household debt is like 300 000. So most people would need an influx of hundreds of thousands of dollars just to qualify as broke.

I save 90% or more of all my income. I use my savings for reinvestments into other sources of income producing ventures

Fuck that! I lived in a tent in the teton national forest for two months. It sucked. No phone, no lights, no motor car. no shower. The sun would turn my tent into an oven by 10 am. Then a herd of cows moved in. then it got bad.

i could prolly live in one of those tiny houses or van pretty happily
gratitude comes in so quick for me when i have to work a soul sucking job
i am currently getting into minimalism anyway.
owning a bunch of shit is stressful
i know people who make 40k a month online yet only own two bags worth of stuff and live lavishly for cheap in countries like thailand and vietnam. they are called digital nomads. when i have my shit together more this is what i plan to do

Beautiful, amazing country though.
