Manure grows

I recently (yesterday evening) went out to the field and collected a couple of cow patties that had small and dead cubensis pins but had pretty healthy and moist mycelium, i have already lightly watered the patty in hopes of some healthy pins popping up, what i wish to know is if i will expect to see growth from this patty soon since i haven't done something like this before. I dont know if anything Ive done thus far will affect its growth

Cool looking poop patty
If that picture of the pins is of yesterday evening, don't expect to harvest for roughly 5-7 days. Keep the surface moist by misting the poop. Try to keep the direct sunlight from hitting the mushrooms, this will cause the caps to crack and potentially stunt the growth, or kill the mushrooms. Some people put tarps over their outdoor grow in order to maintain a higher humidity and to block out direct sunlight.
Good luck - trip the shrooms fantastic Triptastix

This is the best I've been able to come up with guys, im pretty sure that it'll lock in moisture and keep it humid, but im pretty sure they'll need to breathe as well, does anyone think it'll work?

That isn't a good option. Your cow patty should be in the woods (tree cover) or in really tall grass to block out most sunlight instead of in the middle of the yard.
See this guys outdoor grow, its underneath a large magnolia tree (probably my favorite tree locally):
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18655329
Here is Moe's outdoor tek:
https://www.shroomery.org/8494/Moes-Outdoor-Growing-Tek
Temporarily you could put a black trash bag over it, similar to this guy (go to page 3):
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4469189#4469189
Just cut a bunch of slits in the bag so that it allows FAE, and don't seal it around the poop to allow for more FAE, just place a few logs over the bag on the sides so it doesnt blow away (you could do the same with a tarp)
You could also use a small black plastic pot used for growing vegetables and place it on top of the patty similar to the way your tub is sitting on it, just cut holes all over it, similar to a SGFC. You would need to place a brick or something on top of it though so it doesnt blow away.
All of this isn't ideal but I would hate to see your mushrooms die to the sun before maturing.

You can afford a black trash bag I'm sure. If you insist on using the tub, use a hole saw and cut 1.5 inch holes, similar to a monotub construction, which is 6 holes all together. This way you can use the tub in the future to grow indoors.
Or another idea is to get two bricks from the yard, or two flat rocks, and raise the tub off the ground, this will allow FAE and keep the mushrooms in the shade

Trust me, they are cubensis, the pins had been dead when i got the patty, but the mycelium was still good, i had previously picked cubensis from a patty that looked exactly like that, ill update the pictures if fresh pins come in though

I like the idea but I'm not sure your pins will have enough air or light under that tote...
you might be better using clear containers with some holes. If it was me I'd go to 7-11 and get some big gulp cups...

Dude take that tub & get some hay, or cut your own hay and dry it. Put it in the tub(the hay) about 3 or 4 inches in the bottom of the tub. Then place the patties on top of hay. Then spray with a sprayer when it gets dry. I have had good success doing this, but I place in 5 or 6 patties per tub. I have done multiple experiments with patties, but no matter what anyone says I wouldn't break it up. Every time I have broke them up they quit producing good. Peace & Good Luck

You are 100 percent right PsilocyBen17. I use totes in shade with open tops with good success. I picked 20 grams dry in the last 4 days from 6 totes. Peace

I just couldn't really tell from the picture, but I'm sure you know what they look like so. I can take any crisp dry pattie from my field(several fields) & put them in a bucket and spray them good and cubes will grow. If you have a good field the spores are there. You don't need pins, but sometimes I will grab some with pins on them just for the hey of it though. Good Luck & Peace

Drill some holes and make a SGFC
also, mist everyday to keep it moist.

Update: i checked the tote this morning and there is little change as far as i can tell, inside of the tote is EXTREMELY humid, so i'd expect to see something pretty soon. Thank for all the recommendations guys, so far ive kept the tote as it is but added bricks on the bottom for FAE, if the grow falls through i think that ill go with this idea

This hasn't been my experience but it could just be your variety
I just noticed 10-12 new pins on my outdoor substrates and it usually takes the same time for the mushrooms to mature as they did indoors, just a day or two shorter life cycle (3-5 days). The outdoor mushrooms grow smaller, and have larger caps though, so maturity is reached quicker when they aren't trying to grow out the damn top of the tub

Yeah with those bricks keeping the tub elevated a little bit, those should grow good. I would move your patties to a shaded spot after the harvest though. Yeah those pins look super dark, what variety?

Oh ok, I thought you were picturing those as the new pins. You can harvest the aborts if it hasn't been too long and eat those, they are potent. Try to get better images, also if you didn't place the mycelium there for the mushrooms to grow I would be very cautious. If you are not 100% certain of the variety I would post pictures of the mature fruits in the Mushroom Hunting and Identification section: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/3

Yeah, sorry about the photos guys, ive only got my garbage phone to take pictures with atm. I take good photos with better cameras. Just look at the cubes in my signature, and the variety of mushrooms is supposed to be regular florida psilocybe cubensis.

just in case, wipe the lens of you phone's camera. that often helps a lot. it gets dirty from holding it, being in pockets, etc. usually that is enough to make the pic look good enough.

Another update on the patty, turns out what i thought were aborted cubensis pins were actually some kind of contam. That doesnt seem to be serious since ive seen cubensis grow from a patty like this, but now i have no idea about the new pins that have popped out. Guess ill have to wait and see what comes. Is it safe to lightly pinch the stem of the new pin??

They're very strange, they don't seem to have a mycelial web so the inside of the patty is completely unaffected, it also has black pebbles (seeds or spores??) inside of it.

1. I would bet the farm that those ARE NOT cubes in the above photo.
2. If there are mushrooms growing then there is mycelium present. Plain and simple.
3. Just because you cannot see the mycelium that is inside the patty does not mean the substrate (cow shit) is completely unaffected...
4. Just because you gather up a cow patty from a field where you have found cubes in the past gives absolutely no guarantee other random patties will either have spores or mycelium present...

I would not eat anything off a patty growing something like that.
You should find a patty that's currently pinning or fruiting cubes(and healthy) and work with that.
Then you know that the patty is established with cube myc.
Keep it moist and in the shade and it should produce.
Competitor fungus like you found are bad news and often lead to picking poisonous fruits thinking they are cubes.
I also think that they can produce toxins which could get into or on your cube fruits.

Yes I knew from the beginning that they were sea shells that grow in my field too. Don't give up. If you want shrooms take my advice everyone says patties have never done anything for them, well they don't if you just throw them outside, and suffocate them, or let'em get too dry(or wet). I have to spray mine about twice a day along with the walls of the totes. This can't be achieved with nice results without some sort of hay. Use your tote put it in the shade with pine straw even if you don't have hay. Place patties on the hay spaced out a little where the shrooms can take off from the sides, and after a couple weeks if you don't overwet it they will be poppin out of the hay directly. And NO don't pinch the stem of your Cubensis it will most certainly kill it, and another thing it prolly won't make it anyhow it is discolored prolly due to you wetting then putting your tote over it. You can't wet then cover. It allways kills your shrooms bruising them first. That's why open air is best in a completely shaded area, and I mean completely, but receiving some light. Trust me I have done this a few times, and for years. I sacrifice several good cubes , and several pins bigger than that daily to bugs, and heat on the top of the patties. I feel it is good to sacrifice some to the Earth & I do my plants the same ripping up tons of shadeleafy to the soil.(lol)The GOOD ones come later from underneath the HAY underneath yep. Peace

I had a TI narrow it down for me, it is a cyathus sp. Some varietys are used as medicine, and honestly im not even sure about the pin that popped out since the cap is black/brown, but the stem looks right.

Damn accidentally fucked up the smaller pin, but it bruised a really intense blue so i can confirm they are indeed psilocybe (not the pin in the pic)

It might still live,Ohh I didn't see your post before I entered this, but there will be more pins. but what about trying what I am telling you. The thing about is there is no pics(because someone stole, but I'm not accusing, hopefully misplaced maybe my camera) or record on Shroomery of this teck. But if you do what I said you will be picking shrooms daily. It seems like a lot of work, but seriously indoors is a lot harder. Good Luck to you no matter how you do it this is your experiment, and you will learn from it no matter what way you choose. I have tried every way and the way I described gets the most fruits from patties without the need to worry of contamination. I like your eagerness to learn about this. Cool thread I think there should be more info on patties on Shroomery. I have also been harvesting the biggest cincs I have ever seen(8 inches tall w caps the size of 50 cent pieces.

I really really like your idea, but i wanna stick with what i have until the shrooms are done growing, when im done with this im going to try your idea, it sounds like its been very very successful.

Got rid of the excess crap that was growing on the top, relocated the patty to a shady area next to my house and got rid of the tote, you guys were spot on about the tote killing the primordia, but it definitely didn't stop the mycelium from colonizing

Do you have the patty outside? If you do all I did last year was lightly spray with hose if it got too dry, otherwise the beauty of outdoor grows is that nature does most of the work.

I personally wouldn't waste my time fucking with cow shit that may or may not have cubensis mycelium in it.
It's so fucking easy to grow cubes a variety of ways that this doesn't make very much sense...

i would say nice haul. unless you spent the same amount of time and effort into trying to get it to produce many, many more fruits, as you would for a regular grow. i guess. =p

Yeah the heat index where I am is 103 today, however my outdoor fruits are fine, they still grow in the high heat, but you can tell they don't find it ideal. The most important thing I have found is to keep them in the shade to avoid direct sunlight, they really dont like getting cooked while trying to grow. Sometimes I won't water them for 3-4 days and once I go and water them they give me a dried quarter or less within 3 days.
I picked these today:

Yea I will let them dry out for a little longer sometimes, and when I do give it water it will fruit more abundantly. It takes some experimenting with. If the patties get too wet maggots will attack the mycelium, and destroy, but in this case just dry pattie completely, and then redo process. I found my camera so I will take a couple pics of some of my patties although I can't get to all of them today. Peace

Hey Perception do you just leave your tubs in open air,and spray or what. Do you have any substrate to hold h2o in the bottom of your tubs, or do you even use tubs if you don't mind me asking? Those look cool! All I did was grow indoors using a monotub tek (in my signature below), once the substrate flushed 4-5 times I took the substrate outdoors to avoid contamination taking root in my substrate indoors and jeopardizing future grows. I put the substrate in a pile of Black Kow (cow manure), you can buy 50 lb bags of it at department stores in the garden section. I also bought a bag of organic Jiffy seed starting mix and added 1/4" on top of the substrate along with 1/4" of black cow mixed in with the Jiffy Mix 50/50.
I watered it for a few days and then took the substrate and cut it in half, and put both in separate brown plastic Kroger bags. I moved them from the ground to an elevated spot in the woods to avoid bugs, as the slugs were eating all of my mushrooms. The bag acts as the fruiting chamber, keeping the humidity high, allowing light to enter, and FAE is obtained easily because they bag is loosely laid over the top of the substrate. When the mushrooms start growing, they push the bag up and allow for even more FAE. I usually water every 2-3 days or so, just depends how busy I am and how often it has rained. I usually bring about 8 ounces of water for each bag and just simply dump the water on top and try to completely saturate the substrate block, then I fold the bag loosely over the substrate and leave.
Here is a picture of them with mushrooms making the bag bulge, this is how I usually leave them, except that little gap where the substrate is showing was cause I moved the bag over a little, when I leave after watering, the substrate is not visible, as the bag is laid over the entire substrate:

Cool Perception7 that's about what I had imagined you done from the looks of your cakes, but yours look really killer especially the pic with the bags on the tops of the shrooms. Very nice thanks for sharing, and Tripastix those you are picking look killer as well. Just fan dry then store in a air tight jar after they are completely dry. Peace

Thanks - I would like to add that I have slits cut all over the bags for increased FAE, and so that when it rains, water can enter the bag and penetrate the substrate.

Perception7 said: Hey Perception do you just leave your tubs in open air,and spray or what. Do you have any substrate to hold h2o in the bottom of your tubs, or do you even use tubs if you don't mind me asking? I am learning still myself even though I have been a pattie grower myself for several years. Peace Here this tub has h2o in bottom alongside cornhusk................
I love your idea! Looks like its been working very well too The manure i was growing from seemed to halt it's production, but I've also been working on something else, i didn't plan on posting it unless it was going very well, but im deciding to anyways, These were pictures i took from today not very long ago and i started this about 3 days ago, it seems to be going well but it seems slow to grow, i was thinking about breaking this up a second time and adding more stuff to it, if i do break it up again what would you guys recommend me mixing it with?

Good pic. I have never seen pins in their natural habitat. I live in PA.

Bringing that mycelium indoors may cause contamination, I would leave it outside. Also you want GE (gas exchange) for colonizing mycelium, so putting the lid on that isn't going to allow for much. I wouldn't latch the lid, just leave the lid resting gently on the top of the container. If that mycelium picks up speed and colonizes that entire container, I would super spawn that to a much large tub and get lots of mushrooms. Shit just do a monotub

I wanted to jump on this thread to show what I've got going. I wanted to try an outdoor grow just to see how it would go.
I mixed some spawned grain into about a 75/25 mix of manure and chopped straw. Dug an 8" hole, filled it up and then put a thin layer of straw on the top just to help hold in moisture. I watered it twice a day. Morning and evening. So here's what it looks like 5 days later. I've got pretty aggressive myc growth.
I have no idea if the conditions will be right for it to fruit but I'm hopeful!
Also, I agree with Perception... You're going to want to keep that outside where the wonderful balance of nature will hopefully keep contamination in check.

Around 60 low to 85 high. I have a larger patch going also but critters dug it all up. I just put what I could back and covered it with 1/4" wire mesh.

Ok man so I went "hunting" last night and found a few caps but I'm pretty sure it was too cold outside to find an abundance of them so I grabbed a patty that had about 30 gold pins popping up on it. I didn't disturb the patty at all other than picking it up. It didn't break or fall apart. I put it in a plastic container with holes drilled in it and draped a black trash bag over it and stuck it in a warm closet. I sprayed the walls and patty with water to make the humidity right in the box. I've had it in the dark fo
