1st Timer Question - PF Tek w/ Shotgun Chamber
    #23341314 - 06/13/16 09:36 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hello, I used PF Tek with BRF / Verm, using Golden Teacher spores. 8 out of 10 jars made it on the first time

I birthed the jars already and have the shotgun chamber set up with rinsed perlite. When I rolled the cakes after soaking in water for 24 hours, the vermiculite didn't stick on the cakes very well, I'm guessing this is due to coarseness. So I ended up spraying the cakes anyhow a couple times to get the vermiculite moistened over the following 24 hours, (I haven't sprayed the cakes directly since then) and it has been 3 days since their birthing process.

I'm not sure if I'm doing it properly or not. The cakes look a little grey, which concerns me.. and I see a couple spots with white fuzz, so I know now to fan the box a few times a day before misting after researching. But I couldn't really find anything on when the cakes start to grey a little bit, if that is OK or not, or if I should do something about it.

I read about mixing 1:10 H202:H20 and spraying the sides of the chamber down to help sterilize to prevent cobweb stuff from growing, I don't think I have cobweb. Is it safe to use on the cakes too to help prevent unwanted molds from growing too?

I'll post a picture in a few.

And h202 is poison to healthy myc, don't use it... Don't fan before you mist, only directly after... And spraying the walls of your chamber helps 0% of the time.

pictures needed as stated above.. ive literally never done PF tek but ive had grey on monotubs in the past before i could dial in my RH. the grey spots in my tubs were just over watered areas, but it could mean a lot more than that depending on the situation.

pictures will tell all  good luck

Oh ok, sorry about the wait...

After taking pictures, looking at the pictures, the cakes look fine to me, maybe a little more air exchange.

So I should be misting the cakes then, instead of the walls?

Yeah, most the cakes directly, well more like from above so the mist rains down on them... You got a pic of your sgfc?

personally i dont see any obvious contamination. mycelial growth within the jars has that nice stringy complex which is exactly what you want. the cakes themselves look rather healthy imo, but i cant tell for sure honestly.

as for the SGFC. this is another thing ive literally NEVER tried. but by the theory i believe they run off of, i think you need more holes in the unit itself. i could be wrong, but holes spaced evenly around the entire box is required. while you have holes in place, a bit more uniformity and more holes might go a long way. this is what allows co2 to escape and FAE to occur right?

my inexperienced 2c. good luck, im sure someone more experienced can help more

but as far as im concerned, good job so far bud. keep it up and good luck!

edit - oh and my theory on the grey spots, while i cant spot them directly, is as i said before. most likely over watering. if youre misting the cakes directly and dont have enough FAE, this will happen often.

There's a pic of the chamber in the middle, I can try to take a better pic of it if you'd like. I see what you mean, so imitate a misting rain onto the cakes from above. The holes are spaced about the same throughout the whole thing on all sides.

Thank you very much

I would've drilled more holes and would prefer to have drilled them symmetrically... but that cheap plastic kept cracking when I was drilling.. so I got kinda flustered and stressed when drilling the holes, hahaha.

Nvm... I spaced that pic... You need a few more inches of perlite and that tub needs to be elevated up off that towel for the sgfc to work properly...

Wouldn't hurt to trim them squares of foil down a bit also.

this is a perfect SGFC from what i understand of them. uniform holes all around. elevated so that the bottom holes are doing work to exchange are from bottom to top.

id listen to what this guy has to say :p

Oh OK, wow! I totally forgot about spacing the bottom! I will fix that right now.

Ok, I will rinse more perlite tomorrow and trim the foil.

Thank you so much for your observation. I can't believe I missed that haha.

Honestly, looks far better than a lot of SFGC first attempts.

I can't stress enough not to overthink or overdo it.

I know, you're very excited and want to look touch etc... Don't.

Mist and fan a few times a day, and go on about your business. You WILL get mushrooms.

But not if you molest the cakes.

They've made it this far, they're gonna fruit.

Keep it stupid simple, and you'll be tripping balls in 2 weeks.

Rock on man, happy to see anyone's first time going good.

Thanks man, I will  It took almost four weeks to get my jars to fully colonize, I can't wait to make some prints from these and do two times as many lol

I only touched the cakes twice, once during the dunk, and then once during the roll, keeping most of the pins intact.

I know we all do things a little differently, but I always have the best luck dunking and rolling before I see any pins developing and giving the a nice direct misting couple times before the pins come in.

Well, I would have birthed the cakes earlier, but I was waiting for the one week after seeing the jar fully colonized to pull, and by that time the pinheads had been forming throughout the week, and one started pinning before it was even done fully colonizing lol..

So far everything in the chamber today looks pretty clean. I can already tell theyve grown since yesterday morning hahaha..
